Job Purpose
At the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Sustainable Impact through Rice-based Cropping Systems (SIRS) Department develops innovative solutions to improve the productivity and sustainability of rice-based systems. Integrated low-carbon farming practices are key in advancing rice systems toward carbon neutrality and food security.
Under the supervision of the Postdoctoral Fellow in Soil Science, the Research Technician II will, in collaboration with colleagues of IRRI’s Sustainable Soils Unit, will support ongoing efforts in assessing performance and refining integrated low-carbon farming practices.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Execute approved protocols for field, screenhouse, greenhouse, and laboratory operations, including field preparation, crop establishment and management, data collection, plant sampling, harvest, post-harvest activities, and laboratory analyses.
- Collect and record accurate agronomic data.
- Contribute to achieving the research milestones of the Sustainable Soils sub-unit.
- Provide timely and accurate information to the direct supervisor to ensure compliance with research objectives and standard operating procedures.
- Support researchers, scientists, and interns in establishing fields, screenhouses, and laboratory experiments.
- Prepare materials and experimental layouts
- Collect, register, and accurately record experimental data
- Properly archive soil and plant samples for future use
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the experiment fields, greenhouses, and the laboratory
- Maintain storage areas, manage inventories, and prepare laboratory reagents
- Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time
Qualifications
- High school graduate with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience
Skills Required
Mandatory
- Experience in conducting field, screenhouse, and greenhouse experiments
- Experience in data collection in the fields
- Experience in rice production
- Experience in entering data on digital devices or computers
- Experience in analytical soil laboratory analyses (preparing reagents and standard solutions for soil and water analysis)
- Basic knowledge of computer use
- Methodical, reliable, and team player
Preferred
- Experience in conducting experiments involving water and fertilizer management
- Experience in managing on-station and on-farm experiments
