Background

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an international organization headquartered in Gurgaon, India. The vision and mission of the ISA is to provide a dedicated platform for cooperation among solar resource rich countries where the global community, including bilateral and multilateral organizations, corporates, industry, and other stakeholders, can make a positive contribution to assist and help achieve the common goals of increasing the use of solar energy in meeting energy needs of the ISA Member Countries in a safe, convenient, affordable, equitable and sustainable manner.

Under the supervision of the Legal Specialist, the Legal Consultant provides legal support on a variety of issues in the areas of compliance, contract management, policy development etc which are outlined as in the Job Description below.

Job Description

1.       Drafting, Review, and Negotiation of Legal Instruments 

·       Draft legal opinions and responses to legal queries, and interpret policy and governing documents.

·       Provide support for the preparation of papers and reports addressing legal, institutional, and administrative aspects of ISA activities, including through research and analysis.

·       Draft and vet MoUs and cooperation agreements, Financing agreements, Fund Documents etc

  • Manage legal notices, settlements, and dispute-resolution strategies. 

·       Support negotiations and ensure enforceability and alignment with ISA rules. 

 

2.       Risk Management and Legal Due Diligence 

  • Identify and assess institutional legal and regulatory risks. 
  • Conduct legal due diligence for partnerships, projects, and funding arrangements. 
  • Recommend mitigation measures and safeguards. 

3.       Procurement and Contract Management Support 

  • Review procurement processes and tender documentation from a legal perspective. 
  • Ensure contractual protections, liability management, and proper contract administration. 
  • Advise on vendor disputes and contractual performance issues. 

4.       Programme and Project Legal Structuring 

  • Support legal structuring of ISA programmes, financing initiatives, and implementation partnerships. 
  • Advise on cross-border project arrangements and funding structures. 
  • Review implementation agreements and project governance frameworks. 

5.       Intellectual Property and Data Governance 

  • Advise on intellectual property ownership, licensing, and use of technical resources. 
  • Review IP clauses in collaborations, publications, and technology partnerships. 
  • Support legal aspects of data protection, confidentiality, and information-sharing arrangements. 

6.       Legal Policy Development and Standardisation 

  • Support the development of internal legal policies, standard operating procedures, and model agreements. 
  • Maintain legal templates and institutional legal precedents. 
  • Support harmonisation of legal and administrative processes. 

Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Legal Specialist, in the area of legal work.

Qualifications

1.       Education

a.      Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent)

b.      A first-level university degree in law in combination with additional 5 years of relevant experience in clean energy issues may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

 

2.       Experience

a.      A minimum of 5 years of post-call experience, with a background in Intellectual Property Rights, reviewing and negotiating of contracts, and other legal documents, is required.

b.      Good standing with the Indian Bar.

 

3.       Language and IT skills

a.      The role demands substantial writing and verbal communications skills. As English is the official and working language of ISA, excellent command of both written and spoken English is required.

b.      Knowledge of other languages (i.e., French, Spanish and Arabic) would be an advantage.

c.      Satisfactory skills in Outlook, MS Office products, and various ERP systems is highly desirable.
