Description WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group’s Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Participants gain hands on experience in a diverse and dynamic environment, contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and connect with international professionals working to end poverty on a livable planet. The World Bank is implementing a Programmatic Advisory Services and Analytics (PASA) program (ID: P518069) to support China in developing scalable solutions for environmental and ecosystem management. Pillar 1 of this PASA, “Environmental Quality,” aims to help China advance integrated and financeable approaches to air pollution control and climate action at the provincial level. This pillar focuses on generating inbound knowledge on clean air and climate synergies.
The intern will support the team working on this Pillar, which involves provincial diagnostics, cost-effectiveness analysis of mitigation options, and the development of financing pathways for clean air and climate synergies.
Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will support the Pillar 1 team with the following tasks:
• Assist in collecting and analyzing publicly available information and data related to air quality and climate change in China.
• Support the cost-effectiveness analysis of major mitigation options by using data analysis techniques, including applying AI and machine learning techniques to obtain and analyze data for identifying key bottlenecks and priority interventions.
• Contribute to the mapping of clean air and climate priorities in selected provinces.
• Assist in the preparation of presentations, briefs, and knowledge products based on the analytical work.
• Support the team in organizing workshops and knowledge exchange events.
Selection Criteria • Candidates must be currently enrolled in, a postgraduate (Master’s/PhD) program in Data Science, Environmental Science, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Academic background must align with the requirements outlined in the job description.
• Strong quantitative and data analysis skills, with proficiency, familiarity with AI/machine learning models and their application in data analysis is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools and libraries.
• Demonstrated interest in development work and the World Bank Group’s mission.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin) is a strong advantage given the focus on China.
• Ability to work effectively in diverse, team-based environments.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines.

No-Fee Internship Eligibility: This position is offered under the WBG Pioneers No-Fee Internship Track. Students may be offered a no-fee STT appointment provided that they either: (a) are enrolled in a Master's, PhD, or similar graduate program during the entire internship (or are in the fifth year or higher of a degree program in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages) and provide an official letter from their university confirming that the internship fulfills academic requirements for at least one term of study; or (b) are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies and receive a stipend from their university at least equivalent to the minimum STT T1 fee level in effect at the start of the assignment, as confirmed by an official university letter.
