The European University Institute’s mandate – as set out in Article 2 of its founding Convention – is to contribute, collectively and individually, to the development of the cultural and scientific heritage of Europe, through “teaching and research at the highest university level” while also developing “interdisciplinary research programmes on the major issues confronting contemporary European society”, and to act as a “forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experience”. The European University Institute is looking for candidates with a distinguished record of scholarly publications and experience in postgraduate teaching and doctoral supervision, to fill a
Chair in Intellectual History
The Department of History invites applications for a Chair in Intellectual History, in any period from 1500 to the present. Consideration will be given to candidates across a broad range of specialisations, including but not limited to: the history of political theory and political economy, knowledge systems and information technology, post-colonial and intersectional thought, and approaches to humanist, post-human, and planetary history.
Preferred candidates will have the ability to teach and supervise PhD research across a wide range of topics, chronologies and geographies, and enhance departmental strengths in transnational and global history and the study of Europe in the World.
Candidates with an orientation towards interdisciplinary and collaborative research are strongly invited to apply.
The position is to be filled by 1 September 2027, or earlier.
