BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

Food and food-related assistance lie at the heart of the struggle to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.
WFP Technology Division (TEC) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations. Technology and connectivity are rapidly reaching some of the most vulnerable people and places affected by crisis, but they are also increasingly expanding to the services responding to those same crises. As one of the main humanitarian actors, WFP has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works.
The job holder will be based and working for WFP Regional Office for the middle east, north Africa, and eastern Europe (MENAEERO) which is located in Cairo. The regional office provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Lead Data Scientist in the MENAEERO Data & Analytics team,the Data Analyst will be responsible for providing the following services in support of regional data, reporting and decision-making initiatives:
Gather, document and translate business requirements into clear analytical questions, KPIs and reporting specifications.
Extract, clean and manipulate data from multiple sources (e.g., relational databases, files and APIs) to create analysis-ready datasets.
Develop and maintain data models (logical and semantic layers) that enable consistent, trusted reporting and self-service analytics.
Build, publish and optimize Tableau dashboards and reports, ensuring usability, performance and alignment with agreed KPIs
Write and optimize database queries (SQL) to support recurring reporting, ad-hoc analysis and automation of data pulls.
Implement basic data quality checks and reconciliation routines; document data definitions, lineage and assumptions to improve transparency and reusability.
Other tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Two years of relevant experience plus a university degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Economics or a related field. Working knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) is considered an advantage.
Skills and Competencies:
Advanced Tableau skills (dashboard design, calculated fields, parameters, LOD expressions and performance optimization).
Strong data manipulation skills using spreadsheets and/or scripting (e.g., Excel Power Query; Python/R as an advantage) to automate repeatable analysis.
Strong database querying skills (SQL), including joins, aggregations, window functions and query optimization basics.
Strong attention to data quality, validation and reconciliation; ability to identify anomalies and ensure metric consistency across reports.
Solid understanding of data modelling concepts (star schema, dimensional modelling, metrics layers) and data manipulation techniques to prepare reliable datasets.
Ability to communicate insights clearly through data storytelling, concise written reporting and stakeholder-ready presentations.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and translate needs into actionable analytics.
Ability to create and maintain clear documentation (data dictionaries, KPI definitions, dashboard guides) and contribute to data governance practices.
Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
Self-motivated, ability to work on MVPs in an agile environment; ability to work with tight deadlines.
Sound security awareness.
Have affinity with or interest in leveraging data analytics in humanitarian domain as an enabler for durable development, and the UN System.
Proficiency (read/ write/ speak) in English.
