Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in governments, local authorities, and industries to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices, and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals, and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices, and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The Chemicals and Health Branch in UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division, gathers, compiles and analyses state-of-the-art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories and assessments, to allow policymakers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Branch executes projects and covers topics related to heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, highly hazardous pesticides, chemicals in products, among others The Branch also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) working to tackle the environmental drivers, sources and challenges of AMR through a One Health approach. UNEP's Chemicals Science and Policy Unit (CSPU) is leading the GEF-8 Integrated Programme (IP) titled “Eliminating hazardous chemicals from supply chains”. This is a full-size project (FSP) for which the Chemicals and Health Branch is executing the Global Coordination Project, “Global Replication to Eliminate Hazardous Chemicals from Supply Chains,” (GEF ID 11177). The CSPU is also co-executing the planetGOLD programme global project. The planetGOLD programme is a GEF-funded initiative that supports the transition to responsible artisanal and small-scale gold mining the elimination or mercury use in the sector. The ISP-CWP is an independent intergovernmental body with a programme of work approved by its Plenary to deliver policy-relevant scientific evidence without being policy prescriptive. The establishment of the ISP-CWP alongside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) completes the trifecta of panels strengthening the science-policy interface of the core dimensions of the triple planetary crisis and constitutes a major milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen the sound management of chemicals and waste and prevent pollution. Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Chemicals and Health Branch, and the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer, the Consultant will be responsible for supporting Units work, in particular travel-related tasks: 1. Support the ISP-CWP Secretariat in the successful convening of the ISP-CWP informal technical meeting on the rules of procedure and the resumed first session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution (ISP-CWP P1.2) and relevant follow-up work. 2. Support to CSPU in the successful convening of the GEF8 Global Supply Chains Forum on Transforming Fashion and Construction Supply Chains for Circularity and Chemical Safety, and ad hoc ICCA project meetings. 3.
