Description

WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group’s Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Participants gain hands on experience in a diverse and dynamic environment, contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and connect with international professionals working to end poverty on a livable planet.

Background/Organizational Context
The World Bank Group (WBG) Oman Country Management Unit (CMU) supports the Government of Oman in advancing economic diversification, private sector-led growth, human capital development, and sustainable development aligned with Oman Vision 2040.

Oman is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing rising temperatures, intensifying cyclones, flash flooding, sea-level rise, and increasing drought frequency — threats with direct implications for infrastructure, food systems, coastal communities, livelihoods, and the broader economy. At the same time, Oman has made ambitious climate commitments, including a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050, and is actively pursuing an energy transition underpinned by large-scale renewable energy investments, hydrogen production, and reforms to reduce the economy's dependence on oil and gas revenues.

The WBG Oman CMU supports the Government's climate agenda through analytical work, policy dialogue, and reimbursable assistance addressing both climate mitigation and adaptation. The Climate Intern will contribute to the CMU's public-facing climate knowledge and engagement work, supporting the production of research, written outputs, and communications that advance understanding of climate risks and solutions among government partners, the private sector, civil society, and the broader public. The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in climate-related development work while contributing to the WBG's mission of ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity on a livable planet.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Country Management Unit team, the intern will support climate-related analytical, knowledge, and communications activities across the WBG Oman portfolio.

Research and Policy Analysis:
•  Conduct research and literature reviews on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, mitigation options, the energy transition, climate finance, carbon markets, and Oman's pathway to net-zero emissions.
•  Track and document Oman's progress against its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), net-zero commitments, and relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), compiling data and producing summary analyses.
•  Monitor global and regional climate finance flows, green bond markets, carbon pricing developments, and emerging instruments relevant to Oman's context.
•  Benchmark climate and energy transition policies from comparable Gulf and emerging market economies.

Knowledge Products and Communications:
•  Support the preparation of public-facing outputs including policy briefs, reports, blog posts, infographics, presentations, and social media content on climate-related themes.
•  Translate complex climate topics — including emissions data, adaptation measures, and energy transition pathways — into accessible narratives for diverse audiences including government partners, civil society, and the public.
•  Assist in the preparation of sections of country climate assessments, or other analytical and operational documents as directed by the supervisor.
Stakeholder Engagement and Events:
•  Support the organization and documentation of climate-related workshops, dialogues, knowledge-sharing events, and technical consultations involving government counterparts, the private sector, and development partners.
•  Prepare event summaries, talking points, presentations, and background materials for meetings and high-level engagements.

Other Duties:
•  Provide operational support to the CMU's climate-related activities as required.
• Undertake other related assignments consistent with the objectives of the internship.
