WBG Pioneer

Background/Organizational Context

The Central Asia Regional Office supports the World Bank’s engagement across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The regional portfolio spans a broad range of sectors – including infrastructure, energy, water, agriculture, human development, governance, digital development, private sector development, and climate resilience.

The Regional Operations Team supports Country Management Unit (CMU), Global Practices (GP), and task teams in delivering the World Bank’s operational program across Central Asia. One of the team’s core functions is portfolio monitoring and performance management, including tracking the lending pipeline, implementation progress, portfolio quality, disbursement performance, and other key operational indicators across the five-country program. The team also supports management decision-making through portfolio analytics, operational reporting, knowledge management, and continuous improvements to business processes.

As the Central Asia portfolio continues to grow in size and complexity, the Regional Operations Team is strengthening its use of business intelligence and data analytics to improve portfolio oversight, enhance reporting, and provide timely operational insights for regional management and country teams. The intern will support these efforts by contributing to the refinement of portfolio monitoring tools and reporting products under the guidance of the Regional Operations Manager and Operations Analyst.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the close supervision of the Operations Manager, the intern will support the Regional Operations Team in strengthening portfolio monitoring and reporting across the Central Asia program. Responsibilities will include:

•      Support the Regional Operations Team in developing and enhancing an online portfolio and lending monitoring dashboard covering the World Bank portfolio.
•      Assist in creating interactive visualizations and reports using Microsoft Power BI to support portfolio monitoring and management decision-making.
•      Assist in improving and streamlining recurring portfolio reports using Power BI, advanced Microsoft Excel, and AI-enabled productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot.
•      Prepare charts, tables, visualizations, and analytical materials for management presentations, portfolio reviews, and operational reporting.
•      Support testing of dashboard functionality, validation of outputs, and documentation of reporting methodologies.
•      Collaborate with colleagues across CMU and GPs to gather reporting requirements and support continuous improvements to portfolio reporting tools.
•      Provide analytical and operational support to the Regional Operations Team on other portfolio monitoring and reporting activities, as assigned.

Learning Opportunities

• Working closely with the Regional Operations Team, the intern will:

• Develop an understanding of the World Bank’s operational framework, including project preparation, implementation support, portfolio monitoring, implementation performance, and results reporting.

• Learn how the World Bank manages and monitors a diverse lending portfolio across five Central Asian countries and multiple GPs.

• Gain exposure to the Bank’s engagement with government counterparts and observe how operational teams collaborate with clients throughout the project implementation cycle.
