Job Purpose
Under the close supervision of the Assistant Scientist, the Research Technician will perform different conservation activities in the seed laboratory, screen house, and controlled environment facilities. The incumbent will also provide basic support in the screenhouse and laboratory maintenance, data collection and recording. The role will also contribute to timely completion of all specified tasks assigned by the supervisor.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Execute various seed processing activities such as hand threshing, seed cleaning, sorting and selection.
- Conduct seed viability monitoring activities such as seed dehulling, seed germination set-up and
- Perform seed dormancy related experiments and herbarium preservation activities
- Support screenhouse and controlled facilities operations and maintenance activities
- Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor to ensure genebank objectives and SOPs are followed
- Work closely with other research technicians and genebank staff to ensure effective execution of conservation activities
- Support scholars, students, researchers and scientists in establishing experiments
- Ensure high quality of operations in seed processing and seed viability monitoring in accordance to SOPs
- Proper disposal of wild rice samples (seeds, plants) following biosafety regulatory guidelines
- Handle herbarium samples collection, mounting and inventory
- Perform housekeeping activities in the seed laboratory, seed processing areas and herbarium room
- Contribute in the preparation of materials for regeneration and characterization activities
- Support agro-morphological data collection and documentation
- Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time
Qualifications
- High school graduate with 2 years’ experience working in rice research or production
Skills Required
Mandatory
- Basic computer use skills (emails, MS Word and Excel)
- Has knowledge in seed processing and field operations
- Good communication skills
- Team player and organized
Preferred
- Has experience working in genebank operations
