ABOUT THE POSITION
With support from the Global Methane Hub
and its funding partners, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT is
developing an open-source, R-Shiny–based online tool that uses Monte Carlo
simulation to quantify the uncertainty of IPCC Tier 2 cattle greenhouse gas
(GHG) inventories, covering enteric fermentation, manure management, and associated
N₂O emissions. The tool is intended for use by professionals compiling national
Tier 2 cattle inventories who are familiar with IPCC methodologies but not
necessarily with Monte Carlo simulation methods.
A working (beta) version of the tool has
been developed and is being reviewed by international partners (FAO, UNFCCC,
and the Global Research Alliance). To complement that review, an in-person
workshop will engage inventory experts from two African countries — Zimbabwe
and Zambia — to test the tool against real national inventory data, provide
detailed feedback on the tool and its user guidance, and prepare country case
studies to be released alongside the final public version of the tool.
The purpose of this consultancy is to
engage a national inventory expert to (i) test the tool with the consultant’s
national Tier 2 cattle inventory data, (ii) participate in the in-person review
workshop in Nairobi, and (iii) provide structured written feedback and a
country case study to inform the final release of the tool and its accompanying
user guidance materials.
SCOPE OF WORK
The consultant will produce two deliverables:
Deliverable 1:Written
feedback on the tool and associated guidance materials with recommendations. A structured written feedback document (approximately 3–6 pages, Word or PDF
format) covering the uncertainty calculator tool and its accompanying user
guidance materials, with specific recommendations for methodological,
functional, and usability improvements ahead of the final public release. May
include short observations from the consultant’s testing of the tool during the
in-person workshop.Deliverable 2:A case study
of the application of the tool to the consultant’s Tier 2 national inventory
for cattle. A short case study (approximately 4–8 pages, Word or PDF
format, with supporting figures and tables) documenting the application of the
tool to the consultant’s national Tier 2 cattle inventory data. The case study
will describe the input data used, the uncertainty analysis outputs,
interpretation of results, and lessons learned. Prepared in collaboration with
Alliance staff and the D614 technical advisor, in a format suitable for public
release alongside the tool.
THE
CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES
The consultancy is estimated at 9 working days
over an indicative contract period of approximately 4 months, aligned with the
in-person workshop (workshop dates: TBC, Q3 2026).
Indicative timeline:
Phase 1 — Preparation (2
days): familiarize with the uncertainty calculator tool and user guide; collate
the national Tier 2 cattle inventory dataset and uncertainty estimates required
for testing.Phase 2 — In-person
workshop, Nairobi (3 days): attend the 3-day in-person workshop at the ILRI Nairobi
campus, including tool testing, guided discussion, and case-study scoping.Phase 3 — Travel (2
days): return international travel between the consultant’s home base and
Nairobi.Phase 4 — Post-workshop
reporting (2 days): prepare the written feedback on the tool and user guidance
(Deliverable 1) and the country case study (Deliverable 2).
Deliverable 1 (written feedback) is due
within 2 weeks of the workshop close. Deliverable 2 (case study) is due within
4 weeks of the workshop close
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE.
The consultant will be a senior national
inventory expert with the following expertise, qualifications, and experience:
PhD (or equivalent senior academic standing) in
Animal Science, Livestock Systems, or a closely related discipline.At least 5 years of post-doctoral / post-graduate
professional experience in livestock systems, animal science, or agricultural
greenhouse gas inventory work.Active involvement in the compilation of Zambia’s
Tier 2 cattle GHG inventory (as national consultant or equivalent), with
working knowledge of IPCC Tier 2 methodologies and parameter data requirements
for cattle.Experience engaging with national livestock
policy institutions and agricultural stakeholders in Zambia.Fluent written and spoken English.
Ability to travel internationally to attend the
in-person workshop in Nairobi.USD-denominated bank account for receipt
of consultancy payments.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This Consultant
position is based in Zibwabwe (home-based) with a 3-day in-person workshop in
Nairobi, Kenya. Travel-related costs for attending the workshop (flights,
accommodation, airport transfers, DSA, and visa where applicable) will be
covered separately by the Alliance. The consultancy will cover a period of 4
months (August 2026 –November 2026).
