The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union (EU), located in Amsterdam. It began operating in 1995. It is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines in the EU.

This traineeship opportunity is now open for applications until 30 September 2026 23:59 CEST, with an intake on 1 March 2027.

About the traineeship programme

The Agency is looking for motivated, qualified recent graduates or students on an Erasmus+ or other programme or PhD students or Master's students, who are interested in gaining experience and contribute to the Agency’s work for every patient in Europe. The purpose of a traineeship at the Agency is to perform tasks that are predominantly in the interest of the trainee’s training and principally serve to increase the trainee’s knowledge and to gain relevant experience.

Placement description

We are looking for a trainee in the Veterinary Regulatory Affairs and Referrals Office.

Specific objectives and projects

The Union Product Database (UPD), available since January 2022, is the first centralised database that contains reliable and validated information on all veterinary medicines authorised at EU/EEA level. One component of it, the UPD Public Portal, provides official, up-to-date information on all authorised veterinary medicines in the EU and EEA, in all official EU languages, to the public.

In the rapidly advancing digitalisation, the topic of making package leaflets for veterinary medicines available electronically is gaining more and more attention in the EU. In the spirit of accessibility, transparency and harmonisation across EU/EEA states, EMA is exploring a common platform for electronic package leaflets. In this context, the traineeship will integrate with this project by exploring, in parallel, the development of a mobile app for veterinary healthcare professionals and the general public, taking into account the requirements of different user groups and target audiences.

Tasks include: gathering and consolidating source information; designing and developing the app in collaboration with colleagues at the EMA; testing usability with sample users; liaising with and presenting to stakeholders; and preparing project handover notes at the end of the traineeship.

Learning outcomes

You will gain hands-on experience at the intersection of animal health, public interest, veterinary clinical practice and digital product development.

You will take on meaningful tasks from the start, working in a supportive environment where learning is encouraged. You will learn how EMA supports Veterinary Medicines Regulation in the EU and EEA, and how the EMA works and communicates information to all interested parties.

You will get hands-on experience with EMA's technology stack and gain experience in developing technical solutions.

  3. a thorough knowledge of English (at least level C1) and good knowledge of other official EU language (at least B2) of the Common European Framework for Languages

For criteria 1 and 2, you will be required to provide proof in the application form and at the interview stage. Failing to present these documents may result in the disqualification from the procedure.
