Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo, Egypt. The internship is unpaid, full-time, and hybrid. Interns work five days per week. The intern will work under the supervision of the Chief of UNDRR ROAS. The Intern will support the implementation of the communications, advocacy and stakeholder engagement activities of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States. The assignment will focus on coordinating communications for regional events, strengthening stakeholder engagement, supporting media relations, documenting impact stories, and ensuring timely delivery of visibility products that enhance UNDRR's outreach and partnerships across the Arab region. Key Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Communications Planning and Event Coordination • Support the communications planning and coordination of regional conferences, workshops and high-level meetings. • Coordinate the collection of all communications inputs required before each event. • Ensure event pages are developed and published in a timely manner. • Coordinate the preparation of event packages 2. Event Communications and Visibility • Support communications activities before, during and after regional events. 3. Success Stories and Knowledge Management • Develop success stories from Member States and stakeholder groups. • Document good practices emerging from regional programmes. • Prepare stakeholder profiles. • Support the production of interviews with partners. 4. Stakeholder Engagement: Support communications with Arab Stakeholder Groups to • maintain- update mailing lists • supporting surveys • tracking responses • compiling results • preparing summaries • documenting commitments. 5. Media Coordination: Coordinate media engagement for Cairo-based activities, including: • preparing media lists • coordinating invitations • supporting media registration • arranging interviews • preparing press materials • coordinating photographers and videographers • monitoring media coverage • compiling media reports. 6. Publications and Visibility • Coordinate preparation ROAS communication and branded materials • Liaise with suppliers to ensure quality and timely production.
Qualifications/special skills
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). • Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams; • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is required; • Ability to design surveys and polls is desired; • Using content management systems (CMS), photo editing software, web analytics, accessibility is desired; • Knowledge in copywriting, editing, and translating web content from English to Arabic is desired • Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. • For this internship, fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. • The official languages of the United Nations Secretariat are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
