The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting sustainable development since 1947. A key part of the GEM senior management team, the Deputy Director provides people, technical and programme leadership for the Oceans and Maritime Function. The focus is on coordinating resources and strengthening SPC's technical, scientific, policy and programme delivery capability in ocean and maritime affairs. The role supports the Director GEM in achieving the strategic objectives of the division, positions the programme to respond effectively to member priorities and development partners' requirements, and contributes to integrated, cross-divisional programming approaches, including through the Ocean Flagship.

Most Challenging Duties Typically Undertaken (Complexity):
- Leading and coordinating a large, multidisciplinary Ocean and Maritime Programme across ocean management, maritime transport, and ocean monitoring and prediction, while ensuring coherence across teams, projects, budgets and member priorities.
- Balancing competing demands from PICTs, development partners, regional processes and internal programme requirements, often within tight timelines and constrained resources.
- Providing strategic and technical advice on complex and sensitive ocean and maritime issues where political, cultural, legal, scientific, operational and financial considerations intersect.
- Navigating regional stakeholder relationships and sensitivities, including with member countries, CROP agencies, donors, technical partners and other SPC divisions, to achieve agreement and maintain effective collaboration.
- Making programme, resource and delivery decisions that have significant implications for divisional priorities, partner confidence, staff workloads, funding sustainability and long-term development outcomes for PICTs.
