Your team
You will be part of the Risk Analysis Division in the Directorate Risk Management (D/RM). Our Directorate develops and maintains the financial risk management frameworks that govern the Eurosystem’s monetary policy operations and the ECB’s investment operations. We are responsible for monitoring, measuring and assessing the financial risks that may arise from these operations. In addition, we help the ECB to achieve operational resilience by implementing sound practices covering non-financial risk, business continuity and critical incident management.
In your role as a Financial Risk Expert, you will be part of either:
- the IT team (Role 1) of about 10 members of staff.
- the corporate sector purchase programme/risk control team (Role 2) of about 17 members of staff.
Both roles involve working closely with other D/RM teams, and the Directorates General Market Operations, Legal and Information Systems.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
Depending on your profile and allocation, you will contribute to one of the following areas:
Role 1 – Financial Risk Expert with IT expertise
As a Financial Risk Expert, you will:
- shape and build the next generation of our risk management data and IT infrastructure, including defining the target scope, analysing business processes, collaborating across business areas, coordinating with external vendors, coordinating and implementing testing, designing and implementing change management plans, peer reviewing other team members’ code and creating knowledge management plans;
- maintain the existing financial risk infrastructure, including data quality management and troubleshooting;
- design and develop innovative data-driven business solutions, including editing existing SQL queries and creating new ones, as well as programming in Python;
- drive the Division’s long-term digital transformation agenda, including analysing business processes that need to be enhanced, identifying and assessing AI use cases and proposing solutions to improve the Division’s technical infrastructure.
Role 2 – Financial Risk Expert for the risk control and corporate bond analysis teams
As a Financial Risk Expert, you will:
- monitor and manage the risk control framework and the risks of the Eurosystem’s corporate sector bond holdings, ensuring the holdings are managed in line with the respective framework;
- conduct risk management activities related to the Eurosystem’s monetary policy operations and the ECB’s investment operations, depending on business needs;
- prepare risk analyses and proposals for improving risk management frameworks;
- engage and collaborate with Eurosystem staff at national central banks, Eurosystem committees and external stakeholders.
We actively support professional development for our staff. Besides learning opportunities such as training and mentoring, we encourage and support horizontal mobility after some years in the same position.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to enhance your expertise in monetary policy operations and financial markets, sharpen your analytical capabilities and data skills, and play an active role in shaping the future of risk management by helping drive business-led innovation in AI, cloud solutions, data platforms and digital transformation initiatives across the Eurosystem.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential (for both roles):
- a master’s degree or equivalent in finance, economics, computer science, mathematics or another relevant field (see How you can join us on our website for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ professional experience in either financial risk management, market operations, statistics, financial stability or information systems;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Additionally, for Role 1 (Financial Risk Expert with IT expertise):
- experience as part of a project team developing business applications in the field of financial markets or financial risks, analysing business processes, and managing relationships with end-users and external vendors;
- excellent IT programming skills (preferably Python or MATLAB) and a good understanding of languages used for managing data in a relational database management system (e.g. SQL);
Additionally, for Role 2 (Financial Risk Expert for the risk control and corporate bond analysis teams):
- experience in portfolio risk management or financial risk frameworks;
- experience in drafting analytical reports, briefings, analytical notes and policy proposals.
Desired:
- experience in conducting credit and/or or climate risk assessments of corporate bonds (Role 2 only);
- experience working on tasks related to risk monitoring or compliance (both roles).
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
You are also motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
