Overview of positionBackground
The Trauma Care Unit (TCU) provides 24/7 emergency and trauma services for patients with acute emergencies and Trauma for returnees and residents, including falls and RTAs. The Trauma Care Unit Nurse plays a critical role in delivering timely, evidence-based nursing care, supporting lifesaving interventions, and ensuring continuity of care from admission to discharge or referral.
Overall Purpose
To provide high-quality nursing care to trauma and emergency patients by performing rapid patient assessments, assisting in resuscitation, monitoring patient progress, supporting emergency procedures, and ensuring compliance with infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Role objectivesKey Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Patient Care
· Perform rapid assessment and triage of trauma patients upon arrival.
· Provide immediate nursing care according to established trauma and emergency care protocols.
· Monitor patients' vital signs and promptly identify any deterioration.
· Administer prescribed medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and oxygen therapy.
· Prepare patients for emergency procedures, surgery, imaging, or referral.
· Assist physicians during resuscitation and emergency interventions.
· Ensure continuous monitoring of critically injured patients.
Clinical Procedures
· Establish and maintain intravenous access.
· Perform wound care and dressing changes.
· Assist with airway management and oxygen delivery.
· Assist in immobilization of trauma patients, including spinal precautions.
· Support fracture stabilization and splinting.
· Assist in blood transfusion while adhering to safe transfusion practices.
· Prepare and maintain emergency equipment and supplies.
Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)
· Apply standard infection prevention and control precautions.
· Ensure proper hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Safely dispose of medical waste and sharps.
· Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
Documentation and Reporting
· Accurately document patient assessments, nursing interventions, medications administered, and patient outcomes.
· Maintain trauma registers, nursing records, and patient files.
· Report adverse events, medication errors, and incidents according to hospital procedures.
· Support collection and reporting of trauma data in DHIS2.
Communication and Coordination
· Participate in patient handovers using standardized communication tools.
· Coordinate referrals and patient transfers when required.
· Provide patients and family members with appropriate health education and updates.
Equipment and Supplies Management
· Ensure emergency equipment remains functional and readily available.
· Check crash carts and emergency trolleys at the beginning of each shift.
· Monitor stock levels of medicines and consumables.
· Report shortages and equipment malfunctions promptly.
Quality Improvement
· Attend regular clinical meetings and case discussions.
· Participate in emergency drills and simulation exercises.
· Support implementation of our client trauma care standards and hospital protocols.
Required Qualifications
· Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
· Valid nursing registration/license issued by the relevant national authority.
· Training in Basic Emergency Care (BEC) and pre -Hospital Care
· Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles.
· Computer literacy and ability to maintain clinical records.
Experience
· Minimum 2-5 years of clinical nursing experience.
· Previous experience in emergency departments, trauma units, intensive care units, surgical wards, or operating theatres is preferred.
Required Competencies
