Overview
Renewable World (RW) is an international NGO headquartered in the UK, with programmes in Nepal and Kenya. We work toward a fairer, more sustainable world where clean energy is accessible to all, enabling people and the planet to thrive. By 2030, RW aims to support over 500,000 people living in poverty to transform their lives through improved access to clean energy, resilient livelihoods, and climate‑change mitigation.
RW’s Kenya programme is generating strong evidence of how clean energy technologies are improving lives, livelihoods, and community resilience. To share this impact with audiences in Kenya and globally, including donors, partners, practitioners, and the wider public, we need compelling, accessible documentation and storytelling.
The consultant will support the production of high‑quality communications assets for print and digital use, including annual reports, social media, and website content. The assignment will focus on the Renewable Energy for Health in Kajiado county and Renewable Energy to Transform fishing Livelihoods projects in Homabay county, contributing to both Kenya office needs and global communications outputs.
Scope of Work
The consultant will work closely with the Renewable World Kenya team and, remotely, with the global communications lead to plan, capture, script, and produce high‑quality photos and short videos that demonstrate project impact. The assignment will involve field‑based documentation and storytelling, with the consultant responsible for all production, post‑production, and editing required to deliver the final materials.
1. Develop high-quality photo assets
Capture high-resolution, publication-ready photographs that can be used for annual reports, donor communications, website, social media and other print or digital materials. The photography should document the work of Renewable world through a story led approach – focusing on people, clean-energy technologies, community contexts, project activities, if available, and impacts linked to Renewable World’s work. A detailed photography brief will be developed to capture our needs,
2. Produce short impact videos
Produce short 30-second to one-minute videos that capture key moments, human-interest stories and snapshots of clean energy technology’s impact on communities. These videos should be suitable for use as teaser content, social media content and project visibility outputs, filming permissions and project moments will be identified by the Kenyan team, and short scripts will be co-developed by the freelancer and Renewable World. Two rounds of review are to be allowed for before finalising video content.
3. Package materials for Kenya and global communications use
Ensure that all final materials are organised, captioned and delivered in formats suitable for Renewable World Kenya and global communications. Outputs should be usable across print, digital, project visibility and external engagement platforms. Films should be correctly formatted for use across web, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram channels.
4. Coordinate ethically and professionally with communities and teams
Work respectfully with RW staff, partners and community members, ensuring that all photography, video and interviews are conducted with appropriate consent, dignity and sensitivity. The freelancer will follow RW safeguarding, communications and brand guidance where provided.
Timelines and locations
Timeframe: The assignment is expected to be completed in September following contract signing, with specific dates are to be confirmed by Renewable World. The timeline should allow for inception and planning, field documentation, draft production, review, revision and final submission of all communications assets.
The work will include both remote coordination and field-based documentation in selected project locations. Field visits will be agreed in advance with the Kenya team, considering project schedules and event dates. It is expected that the project will take 8 number of shooting days, 4 days in each county – exact details to be agreed and arranged with the Kenyan team in advance.
Deliverables
The consultant will be expected to deliver the following outputs, subject to confirmation during the inception phase:
A) Photos
· Images should be delivered in digital formats and saved in project/site-specific folders.
· Digital images should be taken at a minimum 1800 high-resolution, be at least 600 dpi, and approximately 2610 x 3900 pixels each.
· Each photo and video should be edited and well-presented.
· Exact number of images to be specified in the contract
B) Videos
· 10, 30-second to one-minute impact videos capturing key project moments, technology use and community-level change (5 from each project)
· Filmed in High-Definition 1920 x 1080p
· All music used in the videos (if applicable) must be properly licensed and the producer should be able to show proof if required to do so
· All videos should be captioned in English.
C) An organised final folder of approved assets, clearly labelled and shared in agreed formats
Intellectual Property
All photographs, videos, raw footage, edited materials, and associated intellectual property produced under this assignment shall become the property of Renewable World upon final payment.
Safeguarding & Consent
The consultant shall adhere to Renewable World's safeguarding and ethical standards throughout the assignment. This includes obtaining informed consent from all individuals before conducting photography, videography, or interviews, ensuring that participants are treated with dignity and respect, and complying with applicable data protection and privacy regulations.
Experience required
The consultant should demonstrate:
- At least 3 years' experience producing professional photography and videography.
- Experience working with NGOs, international development organisations, or community-based projects.
- Excellent storytelling and interviewing skills.
- Experience obtaining informed consent and working ethically with vulnerable communities.
- Ability to work independently in remote locations.
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Lightroom, or equivalent software.
