Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the drafting and review of legal documents, including correspondence, summary notes, briefing papers and reports on a wide variety of legal matters; - Assist in the provision of legal advice and analysis on matters arising from contracts entered into by UNRWA, including those relating to the procurement of goods and services and donor financing and project agreements for the delivery of humanitarian and development assistance; - Assist in research and analysis on a wide range of administrative law issues, including research on issues arising in cases before the UNRWA Dispute Tribunal and appeals before the United Nations Appeals Tribunal; - Assist with research and the provision of legal advice on the interpretation and application of public international law, including international human rights, humanitarian and refugee law, as well as United Nations privileges and immunities and UNRWA’s mandate; - Assist in reviewing legal matters related to the governance of UNRWA, including drafting and reviewing administrative issuances; - Assist in servicing trainings, events and meetings, including note-taking and preparation of summary reports and action points; - Perform any other task as may be required.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: - Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); - Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (bachelor’s level or equivalent); - Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. For this internship, the area of study must be law. Specialization in international law, commercial law, labour law or administrative law is desirable. In addition, applicants must meet all of the following requirements: - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Be able to demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter of the United Nations. - Be able to demonstrate the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No work experience is required to apply for this internship. Your training, education, advance course work and/or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
