Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of government and the international community for action. UNEP's Policy and Programme Division (PPD) is a center of excellence for strategic guidance and programmatic policy for UNEP, enabling UNEP's strategic and programmatic direction, ensuring organization-wide coherence and effectiveness in implementation and continuous improvement. The internship positions are based in the Quality Assurance Section (QAS). Under the overall supervision of the Head of Section Programme Management Officer and the day-to-day supervision of the Programme Management Officer the intern will be responsible for the following: 1. Support the Quality Assurance Section in the implementation of the United Nations System-Wide Action Plan (UN-SWAP), the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS), and UNEP's work on SDGs 1 and 10, including poverty and inequality-related analysis and reporting, as well as advancing UNEP's gender equality and women's empowerment commitments. Support the functioning of the Concept Approval Group (CAG) and Project Review Committee (PRC), support the organization of capacity-strengthening workshops, youth-related activities, poverty eradication and economic inclusion initiatives, project review processes, and other QAS activities. 2. Support the mainstreaming of gender equality and the empowerment of women across UNEP programmes and projects, including the implementation of gender-responsive approaches, Gender Marker reviews, capacity-strengthening activities, and the monitoring and reporting of gender-related commitments and results. 3. Carry out research and summarize key developments and emerging trends related to gender and/or environmental and social safeguards and the environment. 4. Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas and feedback on key topics and emerging issues in this field, including mainstreaming cross cutting issues (social and environmental). 5. Provide support to the Quality Assurance Section of the Policy and Programme Division and assist with planning and coordinating meetings and joint events with partners including various relevant UN Observers. 6. Analyzes and monitors the use and uptake of gender, safeguards and Quality Assurance information on the UNEP Quality Assurance weCollaborate page. 7. Draft impact stories and messages for UNEP digital platforms and for other communications opportunities. 8. Support with monitoring and analysis of information uploaded on Open Data Portal and prepare draft reports on the findings. 9. Support with the community of practice and capacity strengthening workshops and assessment (gender and disability inclusion). Contributes to preparations for presentations, analysis and visualization of the findings, etc. 10. Support the preparation of various presentations, using Power Point and/or Canva and other relevant software. 11. Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
A university degree in International Affairs, Financial/Economic, Gender Studies, Human Rights, Sociology, Environmental Science, Sustainable Development, or related field with course work in areas such as such as gender studies, environmental and social impact assessment, impact measurement labour issues, community health and safety, Indigenous rights / vulnerable groups, and Indigenous Peoples, disability rights, inclusion, minority studies, and poverty analysis. Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). b) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Applicants must have a strong knowledge of standard software applications including MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint, and MS Outlook. c) An interest or work in working on issues around quality assurance of programmes, economic and poverty eradication, vulnerable groups, gender, social safeguards, environmental and social safeguards in the context of Leave No One Behind (LNOB) is highly desirable. d) Experience in or interest in working with Leave No One Behind (LNOB), with vulnerable groups, including women and children with disabilities, refugees, gender and social intersectional inclusion is highly desirable. e) Experience with the usage of softwares like these: toshop, Canva, Power Point Presentation, designing skills etc. is desirable f) Experience with video editing is an asset. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
