Position Summary

The Internal Communications Specialist supports employee engagement and strengthens organizational culture by creating compelling content, optimizing internal communication channels, and delivering engaging employee experiences. This role partners with internal stakeholders to promote connection, belonging, and alignment with Children International's (CI) mission, values and strategic priorities. The Specialist develops and manages communications content, supports engagement initiatives and events, and helps ensure communications are effective, consistent and audience-centered across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and optimizes internal communications channels, including overseeing CI’s intranet governance, roles, responsibilities and content standards, to ensure information is accessible, well-organized and easy for employees to discover, navigate and engage with.
  • Creates, curates and publishes employee-focused content that connects employees to Children International's mission, impact and strategic priorities.
  • Develops and manages the internal communications content strategy and editorial calendar, partnering across functions to prioritize communications, improve coordination and respond to employee needs.
  • Owns the personnel announcement process, coordinating with Talent Growth and relevant stakeholders to develop and deliver accurate, timely and consistent employee announcements.
  • Supports Talent Growth in planning and executing select onboarding, employee recognition and engagement communications in alignment with Talent Growth processes and philosophy.
  • Ensures alignment and consistency between internal and external messaging by collaborating with the External Communications team.
  • Monitors channel performance and employee feedback, providing recommendations to improve engagement, reach and effectiveness.
  • Develops communications assets and materials across a variety of formats, including intranet content, emails, presentations, videos, newsletters and other communication tools.
  • Coordinates communications calendars, content workflows, stakeholder reviews and project logistics to support the successful delivery of communications initiatives, employee events, leadership forums and other engagement activities.
  • Identifies and shares employee stories, organizational successes and mission-centered content that foster pride, belonging and connection across a global workforce.
  • Contributes flexibly across the Internal Communications team, providing operational, administrative and project support as priorities evolve.
  • Personal Characteristics & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing/Advertising or a related field. Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in internal communications, employee engagement, internal communications, marketing communications or a related field.; Experience contributing to employee engagement initiatives is preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft, review and edit content in both languages.
  • Experience managing digital communication channels, intranet platforms, newsletters or employee communication tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience coordinating events, meetings, communication campaigns, employee engagement activities or organizational initiatives.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills with the ability to work across teams and functions in a global or geographically dispersed organization.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications and communications tools, including graphic design software and basic video editing tools.
  • Experience using AI and digital tools responsibly to enhance communication planning, content development and team efficiency is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint and other employee engagement platforms.

Overall Decision Making & Supervision

  • This position requires sound judgment in managing communications content, channel administration, employee engagement activities and project coordination, escalating sensitive, enterprise-wide or reputational matters when appropriate.
  • This position works under general direction and is expected to independently manage assigned responsibilities, projects and day-to-day priorities while collaborating closely with the Internal Communications team.
