About this position
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated environmental consultant to join a group of social and environmental professionals that provide technical support, direction, and leadership in promoting the Bank's strategic social and environmental priorities and ensuring that IDB financed projects and other activities are socially and environmentally sustainable.
The Environmental and Social Solutions Division (VPS/ESG) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is responsible for ensuring that IDB financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable and comply with the Bank’s Environmental and Social Policy Framework (ESPF) and previous environmental and social safeguard policies. Specialists in VPS/ESG provide the Bank and its borrowers with guidance on environmental and social safeguard issues and participate in project teams, providing technical input on social and environmental issues during project preparation/due-diligence and supervision.
The consultant will support the implementation of the Bank's operations and will ensure they comply with the IDB's ESPF and internationally recognized best practices.
What you’ll do
The selected candidate will support VPS/ESG in providing timely, practical, and high-quality environmental guidance to project teams throughout the preparation and supervision, and the ESG Guidance Service of IDB-financed operations. Key responsibilities include:
- Support project teams in the preparation of public sector operations, including the preparation or review of key environmental and social documents such as iESRS/ESRS, assessments, management plans, environmental and social management systems, biodiversity-related instruments, and other deliverables required under Bank policies.
- Provide support through the ESG Guidance Service for operations without an assigned ESG Team Member, including screening, risk classification inputs, review of operational documents, preparation of comments for Bank review processes, and targeted support during execution when requested.
- Contribute to the supervision of public sector operations across the region, as needed, by supporting environmental and social risk monitoring, reviewing implementation progress, and identifying emerging issues requiring project team attention.
- Participate in missions and prepare related documentation, including aide memoires and mission terms of reference, in accordance with ESG administrative requirements and supervisor guidance.
Support capacity-building activities on the ESPF and applicable environmental and social safeguard requirements for executing agencies and internal Bank clients and participate in relevant ESPF training as needed.
What you'll need
Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in environmental management, environmental engineering, environmental sciences, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
Experience: Between 5 and 9 years of progressive experience in the fields mentioned above. Knowledge of the IDB’s ESPF or experience working with other multi-lateral development Bank’s policies is preferred.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

International consultant Full-Time, 5.5 months (up to 48 months, subject to eligibility).
