Scope of work:

The Pediatrician will support the IRC Primary Health Care (PHC) team in Za’atari Camp by ensuring high-quality child health services through patient registration, follow-up, and coordination. The role focuses on supporting pediatric care activities such as Integrated Management of Childhood Illness follow-up, vaccination tracking, growth monitoring, nutrition screening, caregiver counseling, and referral follow-up. The Service Provider will maintain accurate documentation and data entry in the Health Information System (HIS), support community feedback and health education activities, and contribute to regular reporting and coordination with internal and external service providers to ensure continuity of care for children in the camp.

Key Responsibilities:

The Pediatrician will be specifically responsible for achieving the following objectives:

  • Support pediatric PHC service delivery by assisting with patient flow, registration, and preparation for consultations.
  • Support implementation of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness through standardized assessment, follow-up, and identification of danger signs for timely referral.
  • Conduct and document basic measurements and screening (weight, height, MUAC, vital signs) according to protocols.
  • Support growth monitoring and nutrition screening and refer children with malnutrition risks to appropriate services.
  • Support routine immunization activities, defaulter tracking, and caregiver counseling on vaccination schedules.
  • Support pediatric referral registration, follow-up, and documentation, ensuring referral outcomes are recorded and communicated to the PHC team.
  • Provide caregiver health education on danger signs, hygiene, feeding, medication adherence, and preventive child health practices.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry into the Health Information System (HIS) and maintain complete patient files (hardcopy and electronic).
  • Collect patient/caregiver feedback through follow-up calls and report concerns through IRC accountability and safeguarding pathways.
  • Prepare regular activity reports and support coordination meetings, field visits, and health campaigns as assigned.

Representation and Coordination:

  • Represent the pediatric PHC team in coordination meetings, field activities, and service delivery events as assigned.
  • Coordinate closely with IRC health staff, MoH health services, and relevant partners to ensure continuity of pediatric care and smooth referral pathways.

Reporting & Monitoring:

  • Maintain accurate and updated pediatric patient records in the Health Information System (HIS) in line with IRC SOPs.
  • Support routine monitoring of pediatric PHC services, including IMCI follow-up, vaccination tracking, growth monitoring, and referrals.
  • Support data quality checks and ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation (hardcopy and electronic files).
  • Prepare and submit weekly activity reports highlighting outputs, challenges, and lessons learned.
  • Report immediately to the supervisor any critical issues including safeguarding concerns, medical errors, suspected fraud, or serious incidents.

Main Requirements:

Education:

1.    Medical Doctor (MD) degree from a recognized university.

2.    Specialization in Pediatrics (Jordanian Board).

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience in pediatrics (PHC, outpatient, or hospital setting); humanitarian/refugee setting experience is an advantage.
  • Experience in growth monitoring, nutrition assessment, and management of malnutrition cases (MAM/SAM) or ability to follow national/WHO protocols.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with routine immunization schedules, catch-up vaccination guidance, and pediatric preventive health services.
  • Strong skills in clinical decision-making, prescribing, case management, and referral coordination, including follow-up and documentation of outcomes.
  • Ability to supervise and support nursing/PHC staff and contribute to continuous quality improvement.
  • Strong communication and counseling skills with caregivers, including explaining diagnosis, treatment plans, and warning signs.
  • Proficiency in medical documentation and reporting; ability to use HIS / electronic medical record systems is an asset.
  • Fluency in Arabic and working knowledge of English (spoken and written).
  • Demonstrated professionalism, ethics, confidentiality, safeguarding awareness, and ability to work under pressure in humanitarian settings.

Certificates or Licenses:

  • Valid license to practice medicine in Jordan (Jordan Medical Association / MoH licensing requirements).

Working Environment:

This position is based in Mafraq (Za’atari Camp). The security situation in IRC intervention areas is currently stable. IRC’s Security Department provides regular updates to ensure that management and staff remain informed of any new developments and security-related changes.
