This position is located in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), West Africa Regional Office (WARO), based in Banjul, The Gambia. The Assistant Human Rights Officer reports directly to the Deputy Regional Representative of WARO. The Assistant Human Rights Officer establishes and maintains relationships with colleagues within the office and other UN entities to collect, verify, and clarify information related to human rights concerns. He/she engages with supervisors and peers to exchange updates on alleged violations, align on monitoring activities, and receive guidance on integrating gender perspectives and protection considerations into their work. He/she interacts with programme teams to support the preparation of notes, field visit planning, and monitoring tasks. The Assistant Human Rights Officer also establishes external relationships with local authorities, community members, civil society organizations, and affected individuals to gather and verify information, explain human rights standards, facilitate referrals, and support awareness-raising efforts. These interactions are conducted under close supervision to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established methodologies.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Assistant Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Assist in the collection of data for human rights monitoring and provide technical support for the tracking of recommendations from human rights mechanisms. • Assist in collecting, documenting, and managing evidence-based information on civil, cultural, economic, social and/or political rights, including the right to development, contributing to analysis, early warning and response, accountability and informed decision-making; and to identifying data gaps • Assist in the preparation and conduct of human rights monitoring and field verification missions, including assessments and early-warning exercises, in accordance with UN methodology, gender indicators and victim/witness protection standards, and provide input to drafting reports on findings and recommendations. • Assist in drafting human rights reports, briefings and other communications and provide technical support for the preparation of analytical papers that inform decision-making, incorporating gender and leave no one behind considerations under close supervision. • Assist in the delivery of human rights capacity-building programmes for State institutions, security forces, NHRIs, civil society and other stakeholders, contributing to materials and activities that incorporate human rights-based approaches and reflect gender and leave no one behind considerations under supervision. • Assist in efforts to promote transitional justice processes, including truth-seeking, prosecutions and reparations, contributing basic research and preparatory tasks to support activities aimed at fighting impunity under supervision. • Maintain confidentiality and integrity and handle sensitive information with discretion, ensuring compliance with the UN data privacy, security requirements, and standards. • Assist in supporting the delivery of training programmes and workshops using various platforms for different audiences by carrying out preparatory, logistical and administrative tasks to enhance the capacity of UN staff and partners.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, economics, public policy, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree is required.
