The European University Institute’s mandate – as set out in Article 2 of its founding Convention – is to contribute, collectively and individually, to the development of the cultural and scientific heritage of Europe, through “teaching and research at the highest university level” while also developing “interdisciplinary research programmes on the major issues confronting contemporary European society”, and to act as a “forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experience”. Ernst B. Haas Chair
The Ernst B. Haas Chair will be expected to lead, shape, and implement an inspiring academic research agenda within the European Governance and Politics Programme (EGPP) to promote understanding of the challenges to European governance and the future of integration as they will shape the wider European project.
In line with the RSCAS Strategic Plan (2026-2030), their research agenda should also touch on one or more of the major themes in current debates reflecting EU’s positioning in the changing world order. The research agenda would further be expected to contribute to the ‘reimagination of Europe’ as set out in the EUI Strategy 2026-2031.
The Chair holder should come from the humanities or social sciences and should be able to lead an interdisciplinary team.
In line with the December 2024 Vision of a future EUI, the successful candidate will have a strong research record, a demonstrated excellence in exploring the many facets of contemporary European governance and integration, and a proven capability to communicate with a broader audience. They should also have experience engaging with stakeholders outside academia.
As Ernst B. Haas Chair holder, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the achievement of the goals set out in the EUI Strategy for 2026-2031 by collaborating with the relevant departments and to contributing to their research and training activities (e.g., by contributing to seminars or providing secondary supervision for a limited number of doctoral researchers). They will also be responsible, with the support of the Global Governance Programme, for the growth and development of the EGPP, including through the mobilization of external funding and the mentoring of early-stage researchers.

Following an initial shortlisting, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and asked to present a recent piece of research (published or unpublished) that relates to the research programme proposed in their application and that they plan to further develop over the next five years within the framework of the European Governance and Politics Programme.
