The European University Institute’s mandate – as set out in Article 2 of its founding Convention – is to contribute, collectively and individually, to the development of the cultural and scientific heritage of Europe, through “teaching and research at the highest university level” while also developing “interdisciplinary research programmes on the major issues confronting contemporary European society”, and to act as a “forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experience”. Chair in Global Economy
The RSCAS Global Economy Chair holder will be expected to lead, shape, and implement an inspiring academic research agenda within the Global Governance Programme (GGP) to promote understanding of national and multilateral responses to the broad changes underway in the global economy.
In line with the RSCAS Strategic Plan (2026-2030), the candidate’s research agenda should address major debates on the governance of cross-border economic flows and on the changing architecture of the global economy, with particular attention to Europe’s role. Relevant themes include global production networks, trade, capital mobility, labour mobility, industrial policy, and the interaction between domestic, regional, and multilateral policy regimes.
In a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical rivalry, tensions among major powers such as the United States and China, and growing strains on multilateralism, the programme should also engage explicitly with the normative dimension of these developments: not only how the global economy is changing, but how it should be governed. In this respect, the research agenda should help clarify the principles, trade-offs, and institutional choices that ought to guide Europe’s response to a more contested and fragmented international economic order.
As part of a broader inquiry into openness, interdependence, and Europe’s economic transformation, the agenda should also consider questions of economic security, resilience, and strategic dependencies.
The successful candidate should contribute to the EUI’s ambition of “reimagining Europe” (EUI Strategy 2026-2031) through research that is analytically rigorous, internationally visible, and directly relevant to the major economic challenges facing Europe in a contested and interdependent world.
The Chair holder should come from the humanities or social sciences and should be able to lead an interdisciplinary team.
In line with the December 2024 Vision of a future EUI, the successful candidate will have a strong research record, a demonstrated excellence in exploring the many facets of the global economy, and a proven capability to communicate with a broader audience. They should also have experience engaging with stakeholders outside academia.
As Global Economy Chair holder, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the achievement of the goals set out in the EUI Strategy for 2026-2031 by collaborating with the relevant departments and to contributing to their research and training activities (e.g., by contributing to seminars or providing secondary supervision for a limited number of doctoral researchers). They will also be responsible, with the support of the Global Governance Programme, for the growth and development of research on the 'Global Economy', including through the mobilisation of external funding and the mentoring of early-stage researchers.

Following an initial shortlisting, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and asked to present a recent piece of research (published or unpublished) that relates to the research programme proposed in their application and that they plan to further develop over the next five years within the framework of the Global Governance Programme.
