The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship is located in the Early Warning Section of UNEP in Bangkok. The Section supports countries in strengthening climate information and people-centred multi-hazard early warning systems to enhance resilience to climate-related risks and support climate adaptation and risk-informed decision-making. The intern will support the Section's work on climate information and early warning systems, with a particular focus on project development, research, analysis and proposal preparation. Specific tasks and responsibilities • Support the development of project concepts, concept notes and funding proposals related to climate information and multi-hazard early warning systems, including background research and drafting of relevant sections of project documents. • Conduct research and analysis to inform project development, including country and regional contexts, climate and disaster risks, relevant policies and strategies, institutional arrangements, existing initiatives, gaps and needs. • Collect, compile, review and analyse quantitative and qualitative information from scientific, technical, policy and programme sources to support project development and proposal preparation. • Contribute to the preparation of project design elements, including situation and problem analyses, project rationale, theory of change, results frameworks, outcomes, outputs, activities, indicators, assumptions and risks. • Conduct desk research and literature reviews on climate information and services, multi-hazard early warning systems, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and other topics relevant to the work of the Section. • Support the identification and analysis of funding opportunities and the mapping of relevant programmes, projects, partners and initiatives to inform project pipeline development and resource mobilization. • Assist in reviewing project concepts and proposals for coherence, consistency and alignment with relevant national priorities, UNEP's programme of work and applicable funding requirements. • Prepare research summaries, background notes, briefing materials, presentations and other analytical inputs in support of project development and the work of the Section. • Support meetings and consultations related to project development, including preparation of background materials, documentation of discussions and consolidation of comments and inputs. • Perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. A field of study in environmental sciences, climate change, meteorology, hydrology, disaster risk management, geography, development studies, economics, public policy, international relations, engineering or another field relevant to the work of the internship. Good research, analytical and writing skills, including the ability to synthesize and present information clearly and concisely is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
