Job Description

Under the overall supervision of the Project Development and Reporting Officer and the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer, and in close coordination with programme teams, the Media and Communications Intern supports knowledge management, media monitoring and internal communications for IOM Cambodia. The intern strengthens the Mission’s information base, maintains its communications records, and responds to internal requests for communications support across all programme areas.

Responsibilities

  • Support IOM Cambodia’s communications knowledge management system by organizing the communications SharePoint and media library, applying consistent file naming and metadata, and archiving photographs, videos, publications, templates and approved key messages.

  • Support daily and weekly media monitoring to keep management and programme teams informed of coverage and public discourse on migration, by tracking national, regional and international outlets, compiling summaries and flagging items that require a response.

  • Assist in compiling the Mission’s media and stakeholder databases to support outreach planning, by recording outlets, journalists, partners, researchers and civil society actors working on migration in Cambodia and by keeping contact and coverage records up to date.

  • Assist in compiling reference materials that shorten the production time of communications products, by preparing fact sheets, backgrounders, key statistics and talking points drawn from public reporting, IOM and United Nations publications and academic sources.

  • Support internal communications requests from programme teams, by drafting internal announcements, formatting presentations and documents, preparing event and briefing materials, and applying IOM brand and house style requirements.

  • Support internal reporting products, including situation updates, monthly communications summaries and social media analytics reports, by collecting inputs from programme teams and consolidating them into the agreed formats.

  • Support the documentation of Mission events and activities, by taking notes, capturing photographs, and preparing short written records for internal use and for the media library.

  • Perform any other related tasks as required or assigned by the supervisor.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • The internship gives the intern practical experience of communications work in an international, multicultural environment within the United Nations system. Over the course of the assignment, the intern will:

  • Develop practical skills in knowledge management, media monitoring and media analysis, and apply them to a live country office information system;

  • Gain a working understanding of IOM’s mandate and of migration governance in Cambodia, including counter-trafficking, migrant protection, labour mobility, migration health and border governance;

  • Apply IOM brand guidelines, house style and editorial standards to internal and external communications products;

  • Access the online training courses available to all IOM personnel and interact with colleagues across the Mission and the Regional Office of Asia and the Pacific.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Multi-media Arts, Journalism, Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution, completed within the last 12 months; or,

  • Enrolment in the final academic year of such a programme.

Experience 

  • ​​Experience in photo and video coverage, content creation and production, including through academic work, volunteering or previous internships; 

  • ​Experience in research, information management or content organization;

  • ​Experience in media monitoring, media analysis or news writing is an asset;

  • ​Experience in social media management is an asset;

  • ​Understanding of migration dynamics in Cambodia and the wider Mekong region is an asset;

  • ​Experience working with international, non-governmental or civil society organizations is an asset.​
