Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors, in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate for the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention; and facilitate sustainable solutions. OCHA UAE is part of the External Relations Section, which is located within the Partnerships Branch of the Financing and Outreach Division. It aims to strengthen the engagement and partnership with all Member States, regional and intergovernmental organizations, in support of OCHA’s role in promoting principled and effective humanitarian action, and to sustain and grow political and financial support to the multilateral humanitarian system. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer in OCHA’s Liaison Office in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Communication Intern will provide support related to humanitarian engagement with the Government of the UAE and partners in the country. This internship is based in the UAE and modality as follows, Full time, Part time, Hybrid, In Person, and Remote. for a minimum period of three months, beginning at a mutually agreed time. The intern will perform a variety of tasks, depending on the internship period, including but not limited to: • Supports in the monitoring, analysis, and reporting on humanitarian needs • Assists in the planning of events organized / co-organized by OCHA in the UAE. • Supports in developing and disseminating information material on humanitarian issues and in ensuring visibility to OCHA UAE partnerships. • Support in coordinating meetings and consultations with partners in the country. • Support in managing OCHA UAE’s social media content and UAE’s humanitarian aid visibility. • Draft summaries, meeting minutes, and reports. • Performs any other administrative work as required. • Support the development of communication products on humanitarian needs targeting specific audience
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in communication, media and international relations. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship for which you are required. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams is required. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working language of the United Nations secretariate. for this internship fluency in reading, speaking understanding and writing in English and Arabic required.
Additional Information
This internship is designed to be full-time or part-time and may be conducted in person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, with the modality adjustable based on the request of the successful candidate. It is offered for 3 months with maximum period of six months, beginning at a mutually agreed time, and is preferably full-time, based in person in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE), though remote or hybrid arrangements may also be explored.
