Duties and Responsibilities

This internship position is situated in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), Office of the Director (OD), and will report to the Programme Management Officer. The internship is intended to be full time and UNPAID, however it may be adjusted to part-time based on the needs of the candidate. The location of this internship at the UNHQ in New York, however it may be to remote work under an FWAarrangement. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the guidance and supervision of relevant staff working on the project aimed at modernizing and upgrading DESA websites and web pages, the duties may include support and assistance in the implementation of web, communications and information technology activities, but are not limited to: 1. Provide support in the preparation and adaptation of web graphics and other visual materials for project-related communications and outreach, including assistance with editing, resizing, formatting and preparing materials for online and print use, in accordance with DESA visual identity standards and established guidelines. 2. Assist with content management activities for project-related DESA Drupal websites and web pages, including uploading, updating, formatting, organizing and reviewing content, links, documents and other digital materials under the guidance of relevant staff members. 3. Support the development, testing and enhancement of online modules, tools and web features required for project implementation, including assisting with functional testing, identifying issues and providing feedback on usability and presentation. 4. Provide technical assistance with web development and design activities associated with the project, using relevant technologies and tools such as PHP, HTML, CSS, Photoshop, InDesign and SQL databases, as appropriate and under supervision. 5. Provide basic information technology support to staff involved in project implementation, including assistance with Microsoft 365 applications, end-user devices, account and access-related activities, Azure Active Directory-related tasks, and Windows 11 migration and user support, as required. 6. Assist with technical testing, troubleshooting and quality assurance activities related to project web platforms, communications products and IT solutions, including documenting identified issues and supporting their follow-up and resolution. 7. Support the preparation and maintenance of project-related technical documentation, including user guidance, procedures, inventories, testing records, technical notes and other reference materials, as required. 8. Provide general technical and operational assistance for project activities, including support for meetings, workshops, online events, communications activities and other project deliverables where web or IT assistance is required. 9. Perform other project-related support functions as assigned, consistent with the scope of the project, the individual's responsibilities and, where applicable, the learning objectives of the internship. Ultimate result of service The successful completion of this internship will contribute to improved digital communications, enhanced functionality of DESA's web platforms and business applications, reliable IT support for staff, and strengthened online engagement with stakeholders. The intern's work will support the Office's operational efficiency and visibility by ensuring that digital tools, content, and technical services are effectively developed, maintained, and aligned with DESA's strategic objectives and visual identity.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Using a range of technologies and tools such as PHP, HTML, Javascript Frameworks, Python, CSS, Photoshop, InDesign and SQL databases is desirables. Working Knowledge of Drupal is desirable. Working knowledge of Generative and Agentic AI technologies and their practical application is desirable. Interest in the work of the UN is required. Ability to work in an international or culturally diverse environment is desirable. Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
