Mission and objectives

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UN RCO) in Nepal works under the strategic guidance of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) and supports the UN Country Team (UNCT) in the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN RCO fulfills the following five key functions in support of the responsibilities of the RC and the UNCT including:

Strategic planning;
Development economics;
Partnerships and development finance;
Data and results management and reporting; and
Research, communications and advocacy.

The UN RCO and UNCT work closely with the Government of Nepal and other Development Partners to support Nepal in achieving Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN RCO team supports the RC and UNCT in ensuring a more coordinated and coherent approach across the work of the UN and is composed of experts in development and humanitarian coordination, information management, human rights, gender equality, communications and communications.

Context

The UN Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking representative of the UN development system in Nepal and leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) of resident and non-resident agencies, funds and programmes. The Resident Coordinator's Office supports the Resident Coordinator in steering the delivery of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023 to 2027, agreed with the Government of Nepal, and in coordinating the UN's collective response to national priorities, including disaster response, Nepal's transition out of the least developed country category, climate action and the 2030 Agenda.

The RCO's communications function positions the UN as one coherent partner to the Government and the people of Nepal. It supports the Resident Coordinator's public voice, produces joint UNCT content and chairs the UN Communications Group (UNCG), which brings together communications focal points from across the UN system in Nepal.

Nepal's audiences are young and mobile-first. Reaching them requires content that is made for vertical screens, published in Nepali as well as English, and produced at the speed of the platforms. This assignment brings a young Nepali creator into the RCO to strengthen that capacity and to keep the UN's digital presence current, credible and genuinely watchable.

Task description

Under the supervision of the National Information Officer, the UN Volunteer will produce original digital content for UN Nepal's social media channels, maintain the joint content calendar, and support campaigns and live coverage of UNCT events. The UN Volunteer will contribute a young audience perspective to communications planning and will build practical creative skills in a multilateral working environment.
A. Content production
• Produce short-form vertical video(reels) for UNCT Nepal channels, covering concept, script, filming, editing, subtitling, sound and export in platform-native formats.
• Design static and animated assets, including carousels, quote cards, infographics and event graphics, in line with the UNCT visual identity and UN Nepal brand guidance.
• Write platform-tailored copy in Nepali and English, adjusting register and length for each channel rather than reposting a single text across all of them.
• Cover Resident Coordinator and UNCT events, launches and joint events as photographer and videographer, and deliver same-day clips and images where required.
• Source and produce human-interest content with agency communications colleagues, showing how UN support reaches people, with informed consent obtained and recorded for every person featured.
• Maintain the RCO digital asset library, including captions, credits, consent records and version control.
B. Channel management and engagement
• Maintain and update the UN Nepal content calendar across Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok, aligned to the UNSDCF, international days and joint UNCT moments.
• Schedule and publish approved content, and monitor comments and direct messages during agreed hours.
• Draft responses to routine audience queries, and escalate sensitive, political or reputational matters to the supervisor without responding directly.
• Monitor conversation and sentiment on UN-related topics in Nepali digital spaces, and flag misinformation for verification and coordinated response.
• Support live coverage of high-visibility events, including real-time posting and rapid-turnaround edits.
C. Campaigns and joint UN work
• Contribute creative concepts for content to joint UN campaigns and international day observances, and produce the assets agreed for each.
• Support the UNCG with shared content packages, including toolkits that agencies can adapt for their own channels.
• Support youth-facing initiatives such as reel competitions, creator collaborations, vox pop series and campus activations.
• Support the digital rollout of RCO publications, including the UNCT Results Report and the UN Nepal newsletter.
D. Analytics and learning
• Compile monthly performance analytics across platforms, with plain-language interpretation of what worked and what did not.
• Test formats, posting times and narrative approaches, and document findings so they inform the following month's calendar.
• Contribute inputs on communications results to RCO reporting.
E. Youth perspective and skills transfer
• Bring the perspective of young Nepali audiences into content planning discussions and editorial decisions.
• Share editing, design and platform skills with UNCG colleagues through short peer learning sessions.
• Maintain awareness of platform and format shifts relevant to UN Nepal's audiences and advise accordingly.

By the end of the assignment, the following are expected:
• A live UN Nepal content calendar maintained continuously and shared with the UNCG each month.
• A minimum of four original short-form videos and eight designed assets produced each month.
• Photo and video coverage delivered for all Resident Coordinator public engagements assigned to the UN Volunteer.
• Monthly analytics reports produced for twelve months, with documented recommendations acted on in subsequent planning.
• An organized, searchable and consent-compliant RCO digital asset library.
• At least two peer learning sessions delivered to UNCG colleagues.
• Demonstrable growth in engagement and reach on UN Nepal channels against the baseline set in the first month.
