Country Director Sudan*
in Khartoum
The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Khartoum, Sudan should security situation allow. Otherwise the Country office is based on Port Sudan.
Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is present in Sudan since 1982, and is currently implementing projects in North Darfur, Kassala, Gedaref, River Nile and Red Sea States. In line with our global mandate to Fight Hunger, WHH focuses in Sudan on Humanitarian Assistance and WASH as well as on strengthening climate resilient agriculture, natural resource management and economic development of rural communities and IDPs.
As Country Director South Sudan, you will lead an impact-oriented country programme spanning humanitarian assistance and long-term development. You will ensure alignment with WHH's global strategy, quality standards, Code of Conduct, organizational values, and partnership principles. You will represent WHH in relevant humanitarian and development forums, strengthen strategic partnerships, lead resource mobilization and donor engagement, and secure new funding opportunities. In Sudan's highly complex operating environment, you will provide strategic leadership across programme quality, organizational performance, security, people management, and operational effectiveness. As part of the WHH Global Leadership Team you will contribute to organizational leadership and continuous improvement of our work globally, regionally and within Sudan.
Your responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and overall management of WHH’s country programme in a complex and evolving context.
- Lead high-quality humanitarian and development programming, driving innovation and the implementation of WHH’s Food Systems Approach.
- Ensure the financial sustainability of the country programme through effective and efficient resource management, financial stewardship and resource mobilization.
- Continue to diversify the funding basis of the country program, including new, innovative institutional and private donors willing to support with longer term funding.
- Lead and manage a diverse team in a complex, challenging context, giving special attention to (national) staff development.
- Lead and develop a high-performing Senior Management Team, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, innovation and adherence to WHH’s values and Code of Conduct.
- Ensure effective risk management, safeguarding, security, duty of care and business continuity.
- Forge and maintain strong relationships with other international and national organizations and continue to expand outreach through relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences.
- Continue to identify strategically relevant partners (CSO, research, local government, international NGOs etc.) to be supportive in achieving program objectives.
- Serve as the organization’s legal representative in Sudan.
- Support a culture of learning and openness to identify and analyze weaknesses in project/program implementation and take the necessary steps to overcome them.
- Analyze the adequateness of WHH Sudan program capacities and structure against the continuously changing context and WHH strategic objectives and take measures to adjust as necessary.
Your profile
- Significant senior leadership experience in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
- Proven ability to lead large, multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams. Experience in remote management of such teams.
- Demonstrated systems leadership, connecting strategy, programmes, finance, operations, partnerships and people to achieve sustainable organizational performance in complex environments.
- Proven experience leading organizational change, transformation and crisis response.
- Extensive experience managing integrated humanitarian and development portfolios.
- Strong track record in resource mobilization, business development and organizational sustainability.
- Strong external representation and strategic communication skills, with the ability to articulate WHH’s positions confidently and credibly to government, donors, partners, media and the wider public.
- Full professional proficiency of English is essential. Arabic language skills would be an asset.
