About us (“We are”)

As the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, the Joint Research Centre provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society. We provide anticipatory capacity, solid expertise and ability to propose and implement interdisciplinary research. The activities are carried out in collaboration with relevant Commission Services, national and international organisations and stakeholders. At the JRC we organise our work in portfolios which are the main building blocks of our multi-annual work programmes. The JRC is located in five Member States (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). More information about the JRC and its portfolios can be found at: https://joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu/index_en.

The current vacancy is with Unit G.6 of Directorate G of the JRC. Unit JRC.G.6 provides high-quality reference nuclear data, measurement standards, science-based policy advice and training in support of EU policies for nuclear safety, security and safeguards. The unit cooperates closely with its stakeholders to maximise the benefits of deliverables, competences and research infrastructure: two accelerator-based neutron facilities, an underground laboratory, radionuclide metrology and nuclear reference materials laboratories. The unit offers open data and open access to its research infrastructure.

The particle-accelerators MONNET and GELINA are dedicated to the production of neutrons for performing nuclear measurements in support of the JRC’s research

for nuclear safety, security and innovation in energy and other applications. Developing, maintaining and operating the accelerators and the associated experimental research infrastructure involves a complex of different technologies and interaction between technical disciplines and people that offers an interesting and challenging environment for a laboratory and accelerator technician.

The post is located in Geel (BE).

About the role (“We propose”)

A position for a capable and enthusiastic (laboratory) technician, engineer or equivalent to join the international team at JRC Geel. You will support the operation, maintenance and development of MONNET and the experimental equipment used for neutron measurements at both accelerators. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to European experimental research activities of interest for nuclear energy, medical applications, material analysis and testing of electronics.

You will contribute meaningful scientific and technical work in a unique installation, ensure safe and reliable operation and deliver high-quality experimental conditions for internal and external users. If you are someone who enjoys practical problem solving, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and supporting advanced laboratory activities, then this is an excellent next step for you.

Your main activities will include:

  • Operating the MONNET accelerator and associated beamlines in accordance with approved operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Providing technical support for the experimental campaigns performed at the JRC accelerator facilities.
  • Performing the necessary support for the development and continued operation of the accelerator and beam line systems.
  • Working closely with colleagues, facility users, site services and external technical contractors to ensure safe and reliable operation of the installations.

You will develop a versatile technical profile in a cutting-edge research installation. Depending on your initial expertise and the needs of the team, you will progressively acquire skills in particle-accelerator technology and measurement and control systems. No prior knowledge in accelerator technology or nuclear measurements is required.
