Mission and objectives

Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. Made up of 54 member States, and playing a dual role as a regional arm of the UN and as a key component of the African institutional landscape, ECA is well positioned to make unique contributions to address the Continent’s development challenges.

Context

The thirty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November 2026 (two weeks). The UN Conference provides a forum for international cooperation on the global response to climate change and engagement among governments, UN entities, and other stakeholders.

United Nations Volunteers (UN Volunteers) will support the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA) in delivering activities at COP31 Africa Pavilion and related conference events.

UN Volunteers will provide visitor reception, practical side-event support, administrative and logistical assistance, and social media coverage (including shooting videos, photos, and drafting clear communication texts) under the guidance of designated ECA focal points.

This UNV assignment will help maintain an organized and inclusive COP31 Africa Pavilion, support timely coordination of ECA-led events, and make approved climate action information accessible to visitors and digital audiences.
