Mission and objectives
The World Health Organization serves as the directing and coordinating authority for public health within the United Nations system. WHO seeks to promote health, ensure everyone can attain the highest level of health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable through partnerships, people and countries.
Context
The Eastern Mediterranean Region is among the regions most exposed to the health effects of climate change, including extreme heat, water scarcity, drought, dust and sand storms, flooding and climate-sensitive infectious diseases. The CHE unit supports Member States to assess climate-related health risks, build climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable health systems, integrate health into national climate commitments, and engage in global processes such as the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH) and the UNFCCC Conferences of the Parties.
The volunteer will strengthen the capacity of the unit to deliver this work at a time of heavy demand, including follow-up to COP31 and the regional engagement of countries in ATACH.
