ICES is involved in a growing number of European and international research projects on major ocean challenges, including biodiversity, climate change, sustainable fisheries, pollution, ecosystem restoration, digital innovation and the link between science and policy.

We are looking for a Science Professional Officer to join the project team at the ICES Secretariat in Copenhagen, Denmark. You will coordinate and deliver defined activities and outputs on these projects, working with the ICES scientific network and external partners.

You will work day to day with Science Professional Officers who lead ICES's work on your projects.

Main responsibilities

  • Lead or coordinate assigned work packages, tasks and project activities, within agreed objectives, timelines, budgets and project requirements.
  • Research and draft parts of project deliverables, reports and presentations, and help organise workshops, making sure information is accurate and complete.
  • Keep communication flowing between project partners, the ICES scientific network and stakeholders, including organising contributions and meetings.
  • Track progress against project plans, keep project records up to date, give regular updates, and raise risks to delivery early with the project lead.
  • Track spending and resource use against task and project budgets and flag any problems to the project lead and relevant ICES colleagues.
  • Help share project results through stakeholder engagement, workshops, training and accessible project materials.
  • Support coordination and take part in consortium meetings, workshops and conferences, and present your project work.
  • Provide background research, drafting and administrative support for project proposals, partnerships and other Science Department work.

  • At least two years' experience in project coordination, project management, international collaboration or a related area.
  • Experience supporting collaborative projects, including coordinating contributors, managing timelines and delivering agreed outputs, ideally in European or other international programmes.
  • The ability to manage several activities, partners and deadlines at once.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, and the ability to communicate with scientific, policy and stakeholder audiences.
  • The ability to work well in international, multidisciplinary teams.

An advantage

  • Experience with Horizon Europe or other EU research programmes.
  • Experience coordinating a project task or deliverable within a collaborative international project.
  • Knowledge of the European marine research and policy landscape.

This appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week, including lunch breaks), for a four-year contract period, with possibility of extension. The preferred start date is between January and March 2027. The salary will be at the “P1" grade, which is based on the United Nations common salary system.

ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salaries of ICES staff are exempt from Danish income tax and are based on, but not identical to, UN salary grade scales. Benefits like those paid by the UN organization are also available for eligible staff members recruited internationally (e.g. installation/repatriation, dependents' education, and home leave allowances). Furthermore, the employee and ICES both contribute to a generous tax-free pension scheme. ICES Staff Rules set out the conditions of employment and the responsibilities of Secretariat staff.
