Intern in the Mission Operations Department - Infrastructure Analytics and Anomaly Detection
Darmstadt, DE
Location
ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany
Our team and mission
Mission Operations IT (MOI-IT) and the Operational Control Centre (OCC) provide and operate the critical infrastructure, platforms, workplace services, and facilities that support ESA's space mission operations at ESOC. Our mission is to lead the evolution of MOI-IT & OCC services, delivering modern, resilient, and scalable solutions that enable current and future mission operations. We strive to be perceived as enablers for our customers and colleagues, supporting the deployment of innovative systems, applications, and operational capabilities across the organisation.
The environment comprises a large-scale and highly available infrastructure supporting multiple operational missions, including servers, network devices, virtualised platforms, security services, monitoring systems, and operational applications. MOI-IT & OCC continuously evolves its infrastructure and platform services to provide greater flexibility, scalability, and operational efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of reliability and service delivery.
Above all, MOI-IT & OCC aim to remain the home of safe, secure, and efficient space and ground operations.
Interns joining the team will gain exposure to real operational environments, modern infrastructure technologies, cybersecurity, observability platforms, automation, and the unique challenges of supporting ESA's mission operations infrastructure.

Field(s) of activity for the internship
As an intern you will investigate and analyse the data available within the Mission Operations Infrastructure – Information Technology (MOI-IT) Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana (ELK) infrastructure, which centrally collects the infrastructure logs across the different operational environments. The platform currently ingests around 200 GB of log data per day, with data volumes continuously growing as additional systems and services are onboarded. The objective is to understand the available data sources, identify operational relevant information, and create meaningful dashboards that support the operations teams in monitoring the infrastructure health, troubleshooting issues, and identifying long term trends.
Building on this analysis, you will explore and evaluate anomaly detection techniques to identify unusual behaviour, recurring issues, and early indicators of infrastructure degradation. The project will investigate how operational events can be correlated, visualised, and transformed into actionable notifications to help teams react more effectively to potential problems. The selected dashboards and anomaly detection capabilities will be implemented and demonstrated using the existing MOI-IT ELK platform, with a focus on improving operational visibility and providing proactive insights.
This project offers a great opportunity for hands-on experience with large scale log analytics, observability platforms, data visualisation, and operational intelligence techniques, while delivering tangible value to MOI-IT operations.
