ENGINEER

This position is located in the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) in the Vehicles Plant and Equipment Maintenance Services (VPEMS) and it is responsible for applying standard engineering practices and precedents in the design, construction, maintenance, repair and liquidation of structures, facilities and systems required for peace-keeping operations. Engineers at this level normally carry out portions of complex projects assigned to a senior engineer functioning as chief of unit and may be placed in sector headquarters to manage maintenance operation there. The incumbent reports to a chief of unit who in turn reports to the Chief VPEMS.

Within delegated authority, the Engineer will apply professional engineering knowledge and expertise in performance of the following duties: (These duties are not all inclusive nor are all duties carried out by all Engineers)


•Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings, roads, bridges, airfields, helipads, railways, docks, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, field defenses, mine detection and clearance, vehicles, plants and equipment maintenance systems, and other related structures and activities in the field.
•Plans and designs specifications for projects.
•Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
•Prepares design layout for smaller or less complex portions of buildings and facilities.
•Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications.
•Estimates costs of repairs of damaged buildings, facilities, vehicles and mechanical equipment systems to determine feasibility of repairs or replacement.
•Liaises with other engineers and mission specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data.
•Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques.
•Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned field missions.
•Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources.
•Conducts research on development of new technical systems, and follow development to identify improved methods and equipment.


Work implies frequent interaction with the following: Chief Vehicles Plant and Equipment Maintenance Services, Chiefs of Units, head of Logistics Unit,
Military staff and staff in other logistics units, e.g., communications, supply, etc. Counterparts in government and other UN and specialized agencies, and UN maintenance contractors.

Results Expected:
A complete in-depth understanding of engineering problems posed in project documents, in which problems are typically complex and broad in scope, requiring some unusual applications of engineering principles.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, or automotive engineering. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical or automotive engineering is required. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations. A minimum of two years experience serving in a United Nations post-conflict area is required.

Fluency in English, the working language of the mission seeking to recruit (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other working language (French) is an asset, and knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
