Role & Responsibilities

Identify locations with nutrition emergencies, develop, lead, coordinates, monitor and evaluate the Emergency Response nutrition assessments and interventions. This involves leadership and strategic decisions to effectively manage information and report on the projects in line with the objectives, time frame and budget with a focus on nutrition/health system strengthening, training and coordination.

Multi-sector relief programme including health, nutrition, WASH, NFI and Emergency Shelter response across any of the states of South Sudan, with an overall objective to reduce morbidity and mortality of vulnerable populations in South Sudan.

Key Activity Areas

Nutrition Project Management

  • Manage the emergency nutrition projects in order to meet the project objectives within budget and within the allotted time frame and report promptly any operational concerns.

  • Provide strong leadership, working to ensure short, mid and long-term positive impacts and outcomes for the beneficiaries, local nutrition authorities and local nutrition staff.

  • Contribute to development and implementation of an effective nutrition strategy including quick deployment, integrated CMAM, Infant and Young Child Feeding in emergency, proactive and responsible exit planning.

  • Set clear objectives and indicators for nutrition assessments and interventions in collaboration with the country nutrition advisor, nutrition staff and other sectors when multisectoral responses.

  • Supervise emergency nutrition activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impacts using both quantitative and qualitative data, and involving the nutrition team in taking appropriate action.

  • Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability.

  • Identify new project sites and design suitable nutrition interventions and provide input regarding future project growth and changes needed, linked to the assessed needs and gaps.

Communication & Coordination

  • Coordinate externally and internally to identify locations with expected needs and initiate interventions in a timely manner.

  • Develop and maintain appropriate, regular, transparent and supportive communication structures with the emergency nutrition team, the nutrition advisor as well as the other ERT sectors.

  • Develop and maintain good relationships with the Nutrition Cluster coordination team, NGOs, UN agencies and other nutrition actors with the objective of ensuring good cooperation and partnerships.

  • Undertake timely coordination in delivering the needed nutrition response with partners on ground to agree on modalities of intervention and signature of Memorandum of Understanding.

  • Participate in State level nutrition coordination meetings, Medair internal trainings and other working groups or meetings.

Staff Management

  • Line-manage the Nutrition Managers of the emergency nutrition team, including day-to-day management, development and training, appraisals, etc.

  • Oversee and ensure quality recruitment, training and line management of field nutrition staff.

  • Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff, to ensure all staff members are aware of project objectives and to provide the opportunity for feedback.

  • Design and undertake suitable capacity building strategies to nutrition programme staff in order to ensure quality in service delivery, adherence to programme guidelines and to develop ownership.

Financial Management

  • Manage the Emergency Nutrition team budget and ensure all expenses are according to budget and meet the Medair standards with regard to financial management, including accountability and good governance.

Logistics

  • Ensure nutrition supplies and equipment is ordered on time and ensure adequate quantities of buffer stock is readily available in Juba warehouse.

Security Management

  • Responsible for ensuring field team compliance with security procedures; ensure teams are equipped with appropriate communications equipment, quick run bags, security money and security equipment.

Quality Management

  • Promote the Medair operating procedures, ensuring that all standardised formats are used and projects are in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards.

  • Represent Medair in National Nutrition Clusters and Technical Working Groups, Nutrition Workshops and Forums in the absence of Country Nutrition Advisor.

Reporting and Proposal development

  • Develop and submit quality organizational and donor periodic reports.

  • Provide quality input to develop and submit quality programmes proposals and reports to institutional and Gifts In Kind (GIK) donors.

Qualifications

  • Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or in another relevant field such as nursing / midwifery / doctor / community-based training.

Languages

  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written).

Experience / Competencies

  • 2 years post-qualification professional experience in a relevant field.

  • Management experience in a nutrition / health context.

  • Ability and willingness to manage project implementation.

  • Good numerical, report writing and administration skills.

  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international humanitarian guidelines and protocols.

  • Able to prioritise clearly, oversee multiple tasks and take the initiative in project decisions.

  • Problem solving ability.

  • Committed to consultative and servant-minded leadership.

  • Team-player with good inter-personal skills.

    Working Conditions

  • This position has regular travel to the field.

  • Working and living conditions may be very different to that previously experienced.

  • South Sudan currently is dynamic and the location of the interventions may be in areas of relative insecurity. Tent camping and basic living conditions are to be expected.
