We are looking for two highly qualified Gender Based Violence (GBV) Assistants for our program in Şanlıurfa, Turkey.

Who are we?

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organization, founded in 1956, that works in more than 35 countries around the world. DRC has been operating in Turkey since early 2013, working with by and large with non-camp Syrian refugees and affected host communities. DRC is committed to basic humanitarian principles; including impartiality and neutrality, and offers the highest standards of accountability to the people it serves. The overall objective for DRC in Turkey is the protection and promotion of durable solutions to displacement affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights with more immediate objectives focusing both on the immediate subsistence needs, protection and self-reliance support as well as a more long term focus on capacity building. In Turkey, DRC works partially through partners, also providing intensive capacity building support, while also conducting direct implementation.

About the job

The overall objective for DRC in Turkey is the protection and promotion of durable solutions to displacement affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights with more immediate objectives focusing both on the immediate subsistence needs, protection and self-reliance support as well as a more long term focus on capacity building. DRC works with beneficiary communities and individuals to prevent and reduce protection threats, and build resilience. Connected to this is the key objective of providing support for persons at risk of Gender Based Violence (GBV). DRC is implementing projects to increase awareness of women / girl’s rights, strengthen protection mechanisms, reduce the prevalence and harm of GBV, and provide direct response support to survivors of GBV.

Duties and Responsibilities

The GBV Assistant will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Abide by and promote DRC’s code of conduct, vision, and values, aims & objectives and equal opportunities policy.
  • Daily supervision of Protection volunteers;
  • Ensure that staff implement and respect best-practice and international standards in GBV prevention and response;
  • Understand and follow up on activities and assess progress of implementation, provide solutions and report issues when needed;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationship with relevant stakeholders including partner agencies, community leaders and service providers;
  • Identify settlements of vulnerable men, women, boys and girls in the catchment areas of centre-based activities;
  • Meet regularly with partners providing services and information to women and girls in order to update service mapping and disseminate key messages;
  • Provide sensitization on GBV to the local organisations and CBOs as needed;
  • Carry out daily field visits and conduction of information sessions on available services, GBV,  early marriage, etc.;
  • Conduct vulnerability and risk assessment visits to identify risks faced by men, women boys and girls in their settlements  and mitigate these risks through referrals to other partners, provision of in-house services and advocacy;
  • Engage men and youth in reducing VAWG through community activities involving local and religious leaders;
  • Respond to calls to the GBV Hotline in accordance with DRC standards (within one hour of receipt during business hours);
  • Carryout case management (including follow up on referrals and action plans) and support services provided to GBV survivors (awareness sessions, emotional support sessions);
  • Report on special needs cases and advise on type of assistance, following discussions with beneficiaries;
  • Refer protection cases to relevant partners; including updating the database on case referrals and feedback;
  • Report internally to the GBV Officer on weekly and monthly achievements;
  • Maintain case management files with confidentiality;
  • Attend internal case management and planning meetings;
  • Collaborate with other DRC team members when needed;
  • On the job training and coaching of volunteers on different topics but prioritizing: minimum protection standards, consent and confidentiality standards and how to work with community based protection strategies;
  • Any other duties as agreed with the DRC GBV Officer.

About you

To be successful in this role you must have university degree in relevant field and excellent interpersonal skills.  

Moreover, we also expect the following:

Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree or advances training/ course in sociology, social work, international affairs, humanitarian or related field;

    Essential Experiences:

  • At least 2 years’ experience of work (in paid or voluntary capacity) in NGO or voluntary sector

    Preferred Qualification:

  • Commitment to the values, vision and mission of DRC
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Well-developed organizational skills
  • Experience in GBV programming
  • Experience with case management protocols

  • An understanding of humanitarian/civil society issues in Turkey and the region

We offer

DRC will offer the successful applicant a 4 months’ contract, renewable dependent on both funding and performance. You must be available to start work from 1st of August and be willing and able to work in Şanlıurfa.

We offer a fair compensation package depending on your qualification and experiences as well as additional allowances such as relocation allowance and living allowances, if applicable. DRC Turkey is income tax exempted.
