Under the guidance of the Chief of Digital Strategy, this position is responsible for the development of a strategic web editorial strategy, including content creation and oversight, audience engagement and communications evaluation, ultimately resulting in a greater number of engaged UNICEF supporters.

This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section, as part of the Division of Communication and reports directly to the Chief of Digital Strategy.  The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including unicef.org in five UN languages, global social media channels, and digital multimedia content creation.  The Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building. 

How can you make a difference? 

Under the guidance of the Chief of Digital Strategy, and in coordination with social and multimedia teams, this position is responsible for the development of a strategic web editorial strategy, including content creation and oversight, audience engagement and communications evaluation, ultimately resulting in a greater number of engaged UNICEF supporters. The web editorial strategy is aimed at advancing and communicating UNICEF’s mandate and highlighting UNICEF’s work through children’s stories and voices globally.  Responsibilities include conceptualization, planning, overseeing, distributing, monitoring and evaluating global web content including dynamic homepage stories, programme pages, blog posts, campaign pages, partner pages, landing pages and microsites. Key to success of the editorial strategy will be the ability to enhance digital storytelling through compelling editorial, multimedia and social media content and increase viewership through an integrated social media and email distribution strategy.  The editorial strategy is expected to support the 11 areas of priority as articulated by the Executive Director as well as the 4 Cause Framework areas of focus. 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, International Relations or related fields.  (Or an undergraduate degree plus at least 2 additional years of demonstrated professional experience in journalism, digital communications or web editorial fields).
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant professional experience in editorial work, including at least four years involving digital communications or web editorial fields. 
  • Ability to supervise and direct a team of professional and support staff:  two years of people management experience. 
  • At least two years International and/or international field experience preferred. 
  • Experienced and current in digital content and audience trends.  Ability to relate to traditional and social media
  • Strong ability to write and edit external communication materials, ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form
  • Experience using software and applications relevant to the position, including internet navigation, content management systems, email systems and web tracking tools.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best in class digital media platforms.
  • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development issues needed.
  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable. 
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

This position is classified as “rotational” which means the incumbent is expected to rotate to another duty station upon completion of their tour of duty.
