Purpose of the Position

Under the general guidance of the Chief of Communication, responsible for the conceptualization, planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of an advocacy and communication strategy to promote respect for children's and women's rights and support UNICEF's mission in Somalia.

 

Key Expected Results

  • Assist the Chief of Communication in relations with local, regional and international media by ensuring coverage of UNICEF related activities, providing needed information and follow up on feature stories. 
  • Support the communication section by:
    • Preparing and editing internal documents (press releases, fact sheets, news notes, situation reports, Immediate Needs document, humanitarian action updates) for UNICEF in Geneva, National Committees and donors
    • Writing human interest stories and taking photographs of women and children affected by the emergency and UNICEF’s response for UNICEF Somalia and global website, Panorama (internal online magazine for national committees), donors and partners
    • Helping to maintain the Country Office website, facebook and twitter through commissioning and production of relevant, interesting material and posting
    • Maintaining a log of media interviews conducted by the Country Office
    • Collating media monitoring reports for UNICEF and Somali Children mention  
  • Support the communication officer in managing visits by UNICEF National Committees, Goodwill Ambassadors, and media delegations to emergency-affected areas, ensuring sufficient coverage and UNICEF visibility.

 

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

1. Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations.
  • Or an undergraduate degree plus 2 additional years of demonstrated professional experience in the field of journalism, communications, external relations, public affairs, public relations or corporate communications.

2. Work Experience

  • A minimum (5) five years professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media or interactive digital media with experience in crisis/emergency situations.
  • Experience in writing and updating briefing notes, key messages, press releases, overseeing infographic production and writing and editing articles/stories/captions for traditional and social media.
  • Experience of working with journalists and organizing media visits.
  • Flexibility to take on or change assignments at short notice.
  • Knowledge of UN and other international organizations preferably UNICEF; good understanding of world affairs, current events and international development issues.
