Who are we? 
 
Danish Refugee Council is a leading protection agency pursuing our mandate to protect and promote durable solutions to displacement-affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), DRC apply a regional approach with operational presence in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Iraq. 
Present in Iraq since 2003, DRC is today operational in the Kurdish governorates, in and around Baghdad and in several South-Central governorates. Focused both on the influx of Syrian refugees and the current IDP crisis, DRC is providing assistance in a range of sectors including Camp Coordination and Camp Management, Protection, Livelihoods, Emergency Response (including food security, cash, and NFIs), WASH, Shelter and Mine Action. The Iraq programme presently employs some 450 national staff and 45 international staff, and is growing to meet new, emerging needs associated with ongoing and recent conflict in multiple locations. 
 
About the job 
 
The Senior Protection Coordinator has the overall responsibility for designing, coordinating, supporting, and representing DRC’s protection program in Iraq. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
 
• Develop DRC’s Protection Strategy in Iraq and provide technical assistance to roll it out, in coordination with the DRC Iraq Protection team; 
• Lead on oversight and coordination of protection specific projects, in coordination with the Heads of Offices, and contribute to oversight of protection activities in multi-sectoral projects.  
• Contribute to integrated programming in Iraq; 
• Support for protection mainstreaming in DRC Iraq, including Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) mainstreaming into DRC action plans and core programming; 
• In coordination with M&E department, contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of protection related programming; 
• Lead on securing follow on or expansion funding for the protection program as per identified needs and in alignment with the DRC Iraq country program strategy;  
• In coordination with the M&E unit, ensure appropriate accountability in all areas of protection programming; 
• Ensure and strengthen regular, harmonized and qualitative reporting on protection, and facilitate results and right based protection programming;  
• Undertake field/onsite visits to monitor the quality of activities implementation and provide technical advice to field protection staff as necessary;  
• Support strengthening information management, including standardized databases for protection; 
• Participate in the recruitment process, the capacity building and the evaluation of the protection staff as necessary; 
• Active participation and contribution at cluster level fora and as part of other relevant bodies, including working groups and other meetings on protection related concerns;  
• Stay abreast of developments that have an impact on protection environment in Iraq and provide on-going analysis on key issues on a regular basis 
• Any other duties as agreed with the Head of Programmes / Deputy CD. 
 
About you 
 
To be successful in this role you must have: 
 
Essential qualifications:  
• University degree or higher education relevant to humanitarian work: preferably in law, social sciences or humanitarian aid; 
• Significant knowledge of International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law;  
• Proven communication, interpersonal, representation, negotiation, promotion and diplomacy skills; 
• Proven strong analytical and communication skills; 
• Strategic thinker with the ability to quickly develop good insight and understanding of the conflict, the human rights situation and the political environment of the program country; 
• Sound understanding of humanitarian architecture; 
• Cultural sensitivity and adaptability; 
• Excellent writing skills, in English; Arabic is a plus 
 
Essential experience:  
• Proven experience of at least 6 years in international field protection and management of protection programs;  
• Experience in international humanitarian work, advocacy and policy development, and cluster coordination mechanisms; 
• Prior experience in protection monitoring and protection assessment, reporting and project development;  
• Experience with managing teams and providing technical guidance and training Able to manage high work load  
• Able to manage stress and flexible 
 
Desirable Experience 
• Experience in training in protection and child protection  
• MRM programs 
• Knowledge and experience of cash for protection programs and targeting methodologies 
• Experience in the region

We offer 
 
DRC will offer the successful applicant a 2 Years contract subject to extension based on performance and funding. You must be available to start work in September 2017 and be willing to live and work in Iraq. 
Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for Expatriates; please refer to www.drc.ngo under Vacancies. This position will be placed at A11 or A12 DRC’s salary scale depending on experience. The R&R cycle for Erbil is every 12 weeks.
