UNOPS Data Centre Infrastructure Technician supports a diverse and complex portfolio of electromechanical and automation systems designed to maintain the optimum environmental conditions for the operation of all telecommunications and IT equipment to ensure full availability, continuous and safe operation year round.

The United Nations Department of Field Support, Information and Communications Technology Division (UN DFS-ICTD) is responsible for the maintenance of the TIER III Certified Facility to satisfy the requirements of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions as well as Special Political Missions (SPMs).

The Field Technology Service (FTS) at the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) is responsible for the maintenance of the infrastructures of the Information and Communications Technology Facility’s infrastructure. This infrastructure is composed of:  power systems, cooling systems and fire suppression systems, in addition to the rack hosting in support of operational requirements of peacekeeping missions as well as special political missions.  FTS strives to ensure implementation of the best practices in the data centre industry including  green energy and reduction of carbon emissions.  

Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the UNOPS Senior Programme Manager, the incumbent works under the direct guidance of the Chief Technology Infrastructure Support Unit, Infrastructure Operations Section, at the UN ICT Facility in Valencia, Spain and is responsible for following duties.
  • Execution of the Preventive Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance scheduled plan in support of GSC CITS Critical Data Centre Facility activities.

- These activities are associated to the UNGSC Satellite Hub and Data Centre Environmental (Power & Cooling) requirements applicable for Data Centre infrastructure service continuity in Valencia. Such activities and requirements  are executed according to the scope of the ISO 27001, ISO 14001 and TIER III certifications held by UNGSC

- HVAC
- Power distribution, Power Back up  and UPS Systems (Generator, PLC, UPS)
- Fire Suppression Systems;

  • Provision of  7/24/365  ICT Infrastructure support

-  Perform “on call” duty technical service to react on any incident affecting DFS Data Centre infrastructures.

-  Liaise with External Service Providers or contractors to support other technologies integrated within the DFS Data Centre infrastructures (Main electric lines, Fire Suppression Systems, UPS’s and  Generators) 

-  Monitor, analyse and optimize cooling systems and power usage to upgrade performance and increase efficiency, reducing power consumption when possible.

  • Coordinate with FTS management about the conduct of the Uptime Tier III, and activities related to ISO’s certification and re-certification of the Data Centre

- Assist in updating documentation required by the Uptime Institute with the definition of Tier III certification of the Data Centre.

-  Assist to maintain, improve or execute operations in compliance with ISO 27001 Standard Operating Procedures within the Unit.

- Carry out internal trainings and regular meetings for ISO 27001 and 14001standards, reviews, updates and archives of hard copy documentation related to mechanical infrastructures of the Data Centre.

  • Rack Hosting Service provided to the Data Centre for IT equipment installation and infrastructure modification as required

-  Ensure redundant power distribution within each rack

-  Provide metal frame support, modification or customization as  required

-  Provide  grills and ventilation devices under floating pavement for proper rack cooling

-  Maintain power balance in all racks to optimize power consumption and eliminate power waste.

-  Construction of prototype and wherever required in rack customization, serial replication or modification of parts, providing cost estimation analysis.

  • Optimization of GSC Telecommunications infrastructure in order to allow effective and efficient operations in a resource limited environment

-  Magnetic data erasing procedures

  Apply on all media hard drive or tape / cassette before submission for write off procedure.

-  Audio Video systems

  Hardware installation of LCD/PLASMA monitor, ceiling video projector, audio power amplifier and speakers.

Access Control System

  Revision of access point control devices, Door locks, UTP routing, access control terminal

 Application set-up, maintenance and support to CITS front desk

  troubleshooting (configuration, hardware)

  • Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • High School or equivalent diploma
Experience
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of Data Centre Infrastructure is required.  
  •  Experience in an international/ multicultural organization in the field of Data Centre Infrastructure is desirable
  • Knowledge of Data Centre Infrastructure Monitoring Systems is desirable.
  • Certification in Advanced Fire Fighting is desirable.
  • Foundation certification in ITIL Service management is desirable. 
  • First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is desirable. 
  • Certification in Large-scale PV Plants is desirable 
  • Certification in Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) is desirable

Language requirements

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
