Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, Waste Technology Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division is responsible for the implementation of activities under a matrix structure of programmes on the nuclear fuel cycle and materials technologies, on the management of radioactive waste and on research reactors.The Research Reactor Section (RRS) works with Member States at every step of the research reactor) fuel cycle or infrastructure development programme\: from the initial decision to build a research reacot, to ensuring safe and effective utilization, through a lifetime of operation and maintenance to final decommissioning and disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The Section works with Member States individually, regionally, and in international coalitions to carry out its activities. Staff support related projects organized through the IAEA's Department of Technical Cooperation and work closely with staff from the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications and the Department of Nuclear Safety. The Section's projects and activities are implemented in close partnership with the Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors Programme, the International Group on Research Reactors, the European Nuclear Society, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's Nuclear Energy Agency, as well as with other international programmes and organizations.


Main Purpose

Reporting to the Section Head and as a member of a team led by one or more Research Reactor Project Managers, the Associate Project Officer provides direct support to the development and implementation of IAEA activities to increase relevant capabilities within interested Member States for policy making, strategic planning and technology development in the areas of Research Reactor operations and maintenance, modernization and refurbishment, utilization, fuel cycle, and new Research Reactor projects.


Role

The Associate Project Officer fulfils several roles within the Group\: an organizational, policy, project implementation or technical specialist, providing advice and support to Project Managers on Research Reactor operations and maintenance, utilization, fuel cycle and new projects; an associate project officer, supporting the coordination and implementation of IAEA activities under the direct guidance of the relevant Project Manager to achieve performance goals; a facilitator, encouraging internal and external cooperation and development through communication with both IAEA and external project stakeholders; a technical writer producing and reviewing documents relating to Research Reactors; and a team member of IAEA missions to interested member states working to address relevant Research Reactor challenges.


Functions / Key Results Expected

- Under the direct guidance of the relevant Research Reactor Project Managers and the supervision of the Research Reactor Section Head\:
- Contribute to implement the IAEA's activities on Research Reactors to meet the programmatic objectives.
- Gather and provide information on Research Reactors operations and maintenance, utilization, fuel cycle and new projects.
- As an associate project officer, support projects in the above mentioned areas through evaluating proposals, planning and implementing activities; preparing and monitoring contracts for the supply of goods and services such as plant equipment, external assistance or research; and reviewing the results achieved.
- Within the scope of relevant projects, initiate, plan and co-chair meetings for Member States to share good practices and lessons learned as well as to review and discuss the status and progress achieved to overcome Research Reactor related challenges. Undertake studies and comparative assessments of various specific issues and present conclusions, lessons learned, etc.
- Coordinate/liaise, under the guidance of the relevant Research Reactor Project Managers, with external institutions and stakeholders; gather and maintain knowledge of international good practices and future trends in the subject area.
- Contribute to the development of documents and technical reports on important aspects of project activities related to Research Reactors and update IAEA publications in the subject area.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

- Bachelor's Degree - nuclear engineering or related technical areas

- At least 2 years of professional experience in the area of research reactors or other nuclear technologies.
- Experience in international cooperation with proven ability to participate effectively in a multinational and multidisciplinary team with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- Experience in technical writing in English for producing and reviewing documents in the subject area.
- Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $46026 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 22139, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
