Senior Advisor Humanitarian Aid / Deputy Head of Humanitarian Aid Department

Humanitarian Assistance is focused on providing support for people in need in crisis and disasters currently in Ethiopia, Greece, Haiti, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Nepal, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and the Ukraine.


Embedded in the Department for Humanitarian Aid, the Senior Advisor is acting as Deputy Head of Department (20 %) and Head of Advisory Unit Humanitarian Aid (80 %). Advisors provide technical advice and support to CaCH field projects, develop new tools, offer capacity building and develop analytical papers. They assist in strategic planning processes and contribute to national and international networks as well as influence international policies through lobbying.

Your duties
  • Substituting for the Head of Department in case of absence and presenting CaCH Humanitarian Aid Department on behalf of the Head of Department in external relations, support the Head of Department as required;

  • Run strategic and programmatic processes related to Humaniatrian Aid;

  • Expert advice to colleagues, superiors and external partners that is solution-oriented, appropriate to the target group and effective;

  • Achieve and retain thematic leadership in individual aspects of the thematic area Humanitarian Aid;

  • Develop the thematic area in conceptual terms and make it available for context-specific use in the operations of CaCH e.g. by supporting collective learning processes (workshops, project groups etc.);

  • Follow and evaluate the relevance of new research results for CaCH as well as trends, opportunities and risks;

  • Shape and influence positions in international negotiations and partnerships by establishing and retaining relationships with various stakeholder groups (peers, donors, academia, Caritas network etc.);

  • Represent Caritas and its positions on external specialist bodies and at public events.

Our requirements
  • Master or equivalent in a relevant discipline;

  • Minimum 5 years relevant work experience in international development ans specifically humanitarian aid including extensive experience in the field;

  • Practical experience in the planning, management, monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian projects;

  • Proven expertise in applying different concept such as LRRD, Resilience etc. as well as practical experience in specific working areas/tools applied in emergency situations;

  • Established network with key government and non-government actors in at least 2 working areas related to humanitarian assistance;

  • Strong motivation to work in close partnership with national partners;

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, and to pay attention to details;

  • Open-minded personality, thriving to develop ideas to improve ongoing projects through proper planning and implemention; 

  • Strong listening, comprehension and dialogue skills;

  • Willingness to undertake regular field visits into non-family duty stations and on short notice;

  • Ability to negotiate in German, English and French, excellent writing and presentation skills;

  • Knowledge of Swiss NGOs and /or Caritas network is an asset.

Your place of work will be Lucerne incl. travel to project areas.
Starting date: 01.01.2018 or as agreed upon.
