Background Information - Myanmar

Myanmar is one of UNOPS leading offices in Asia, acting as fund manager for three of the largest development programmes in the country, namely the Three Millennium Development Goal Fund (3MDG), the Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) and the Joint Peace Fund (JPF). In addition, UNOPS Myanmar is Principal Recipient for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Myanmar and Cambodia, and for the Global Fund¹s Regional Artemisinin-resistance Initiative targeting drug resistant malaria in the Greater Mekong sub-region. UNOPS provides procurement, infrastructure and project management services to a wide range of organizations in the country, including the Government of Myanmar, international development partners, other UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs. UNOPS Myanmar plays a critical role in ensuring that the quality of services provided to its partners meets stringent requirements of speed, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Background Information - Job-specific

The internship will include working for UNOPS Myanmar office (MMOC), 3MDG and LIFT.

In partnership with the Government of Myanmar and other partners, the 3MDG Fund strengthens the national health system at all levels, extending access for poor and vulnerable populations to quality health services. The 3MDG Fund has a significant, timely and nationwide impact improving maternal, newborn and child health, combating HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and health system strengthening to deliver sustainable, efficient and responsive healthcare across Myanmar. The Fund provides substantial resources aligned with the Ministry of Health’s priorities and initiatives in support of these goals.

LIFT’s goal is to sustainably reduce the number of people in Myanmar living in poverty and hunger, and to ensure that Myanmar’s rural transformation is inclusive. LIFT works through implementing partners to achieve the following outcomes: increased incomes of rural households; increased resilience of poor rural households and communities to setbacks and change; improved nutrition of women, men and children, and improved policies and effective public expenditure for pro-poor rural development. LIFT works closely with the Government of Myanmar to promote pro-poor policies.  

The intern will work in the communications unit of UNOPS, with tasks from UNOPS, the Three Millennium Development Goal Fund and the Lift Fund. They will work under the overall supervision of UNOPS Partnerships Advisor, and will assist in the designing of various internal/external materials (i.e. reports, posters, icons, etc.) for print and web. They will also work on video projects, including shooting and editing. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a test to assess their creative capacity.

The intern is responsible to abide by security policies, administrative instructions, plans and procedures of the UN Security Management System and that of UNOPS.

Functional Responsibilities

1.       Duties and Responsibilities

The Graphics Assistant (Intern) shall be responsible for performing the following duties:

  • Designing and laying out materials in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, MS Word and PowerPoint
  • Producing clear, concise and vivid materials that convey key messages to target audiences, including materials for events, social media and website
  • Creating short videos which convey key messages to target audiences
  • Image management, including research and organization of the Lift and 3MDG photo library
  • To perform certain administrative tasks such as mailing materials produced by the Communications Unit of Lift and 3MDG
  • Reporting to and performing other duties as required by the supervisor

2.       Training components and participation in missions

  • UNOPS highly values interns’ contributions and realizes the importance of learning during an internship. UNOPS thus provides a wealth of opportunities for on-the-job training, studying project-related documents, data analysis and preparation of reports and statistics. UNOPS encourages the intern to raise specific wishes regarding learning opportunities before and during the internship.
  • The intern will be required to take Basic and Advanced Security in the Field courses before arrival and the Department of Safety and Security briefing immediately after arrival. S/he will take the online UN and UNOPS induction courses on arrival. The intern will participate in the UNOPS Myanmar Induction Training that comprehensively covers all aspects of UNOPS work in Myanmar. S/he will have access to a large offering of online training on the comprehensive UNOPS intranet and opportunities to communicate with UNOPS HQ, Regional Office, and other country offices. 

3. Terms and Conditions

UNOPS Myanmar will provide the intern with the following:

  • Workspace in a shared office including computer, stationery, landline telephone
  • Use of common office facilities, as for all UNOPS staff
  • A monthly stipend from UNOPS, if they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one-time travel lump sum of USD 500 if the intern is not receiving travel funding from other institutions. However, interns must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel, insurance coverage.
  • Assistance with application for work visa

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Enrolment in a University Degree Programme in Graphic Design, Illustration, Visual Communication studies or a related field. Applicants who have graduated from such studies within the past three years will also be considered eligible for the position.

Experience

  • Good knowledge of Adobe CC suite DTP software i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign is required
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skill, i.e. MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, MS Word and Excel is required
  • Good knowledge of video editing software (premiere pro or final cut) and experience in video editing projects is required
  • General interest in photography and basic photography skill is required
  • A portfolio of relevant work would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of a CMS system for web editing is desirable.
  • Basic understanding of Front-end UI user interface and human-computer interaction from a design perspective would be an asset.

Language Skills

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.

Interns are responsible for arranging their own travel. They will receive support to secure their necessary visas. This internship is not designed to lead to a position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend of 650 USD per month from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lump sum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel, and other insurance coverage.
