The Opportunity

The Child Protection Policy Unit based in Woking, Surrey UK provides the strategic direction for the gender responsive safeguarding of children and young people in Plan International in line with the overall organisation strategy. This includes the implementation of the policy, all activities throughout Plan International associated with keeping children and young people safe and protected in a manner that recognizes the safeguarding needs of their differing gender and other identities and ensuring that where they are engaged in our decision making process it is done in a way that is legitimate safe and meaningful for them.

In addition the activities of the Unit includes the management of reported policy breaches and incidents where there is concern about a child or young person’s welfare.

The role of the Child and Youth Safeguarding Technical Officer is to provide support (administrative and technical) to the work of the CPP Unit, developing gender responsive safeguarding tools, guidelines, procedures and processes, undertaking case review and management and coordinating Plan International’s Global Youth Advisory Panel (GYAP), which consists of eight young people aged 17-23 from around the world who provide an essential youth perspective on youth engagement in Plan’s internal decision making and governance.

The Individual

You will have substantial demonstrable experience in safeguarding and child rights in an international development setting as it applies in the context of gender and other factors of identity, to the development of processes, managing policy breaches, investigations, case management and review, safe and meaningful engagement of children and young people, with a focus on engagement in governance, events and events planning and consultations.

With strong technical knowledge, expertise and understanding of ethical, meaningful and inclusive child and youth engagement, educational background and practical experience in development and/or youth work and working directly with children and youth in participatory ways you will have excellent research, training and facilitation skills.

Strong communication skills, the ability to inspire and influence and excellent training and facilitation skills are imperative. You will be self-motivated with excellent prioritisation skills and a flexible, resilient approach.

Location: International Headquarters in Woking, Surrey (approximately 25 minutes from London Waterloo)

Type of Role: Two year fixed term contract

Reports to: Head of Child Protection Policy

Salary: £35-45000 per annum
