Protection Assistant- Mosul (Two Positions) 
Duty Station [Mosul with field visits to surrounding areas] 
 
We are looking for two highly qualified Protection Assistants with minimum 2 years of experience in protection. The selected candidates are required to work in Mosul with field visits to surrounding areas. Qualified female candidates are encouraged to apply. 
 
 
 
Who are we?  
Danish Refugee Council is a leading protection agency pursuing our mandate to protect and promote durable solutions to displacement-affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), DRC apply a regional approach with operational presence in Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Iraq.  
Present in Iraq since 2003, DRC is today operational in the Kurdish governorates, in and around Baghdad and in several South-Central governorates. Focused both on the influx of Syrian refugees and the current IDP crisis, DRC is providing assistance in a range of sectors including Camp Coordination and Camp Management, Protection, Livelihoods, Emergency Response (including food security, cash, and NFIs), WASH, Shelter and Mine Action. The Iraq programme presently employs some 450 national staff and 45 international staff, and is growing to meet new, emerging needs associated with ongoing and recent conflict in multiple locations.  
 
 
About the job 
The Protection Assistant is responsible for conducting a range of protection activities, including protection monitoring, information provision, regular participatory protection assessments of potential/selected beneficiaries and organization and implementation of community-based activities, such as life-skills and recreational activities. The post holder works in close cooperation and coordination with other team members, especially the Protection Officer and the Psychosocial Officer. The position holder is fully deployed to support DRC Protection’s response to the Mosul crisis in Mosul area. 
 
 
Reporting lines 
  • Reports to: Protection Officer and Psychosocial Officer 
  • Subordinates: direct supervision of community volunteers 
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Under direct supervision of the Protection Officer, conduct regular field participatory protection monitoring and assessments, using as much as possible an age, gender and diversity approach, in order to fully understand protection concerns and priorities. Assess the resources available to the targeted displaced community to increase their own safety and protection.
  • Enhance and facilitate discussion on main protection concerns and response capacity within the displaced and the host communities.
  • Identify, individually advise and assess the needs of the most vulnerable individuals, particularly women at risk, and the available response opportunities in accordance with set guidelines, plans and schedules.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessment and identify cases for assistance according to pre-defined criteria.
  • Refer protection cases to the Protection Officer, the Psychosocial Officer and/or relevant agencies, including updating the database on case referral and follow up.
  • Report on special needs cases and advise on type of assistance, following discussion with beneficiaries.
  • Develop monthly visit plans on assessing, re-assessing and following up cases in coordination with other (field) staff.
  • Ensure dissemination of clear and reliable information on service provision and other pre-selected key topics.
  • Conduct information sessions, record feedback (comments, suggestions) and report results back to Protection Officer on issues of concern with recommended areas of intervention.
  • Under direct supervision of the Psychosocial Officer, plan, organize and implement a range of community-based activities, especially socio-recreational and life-skills activities prioritizing extremely vulnerable individuals and people with specific needs, with the aim of improving their psychosocial well-being
  • Undertake site and field visits to raise awareness about DRC community-based initiatives and mobilize individuals and families to participate in these activities
  • Submit weekly and monthly activity plans, reports and recommendations for assessed persons and identified beneficiaries to the Protection Officer and the Psychosocial Officer;
  • Maintain constructive relationships with municipalities, other local government institutions, local NGO partners and other international organizations in coordination with the other team members
  • Contribute to capacity building of local organizations, community groups, and stakeholders  
  • Prepare and maintain in a well-organized manner comprehensive files for each managed case, as well as keep a report of information gathered during field visits and in-house meetings 
Other 
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Line Manager;
  • Conduct duties in accordance with DRC Iraq programme Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Conduct duties in strict accordance with DRC Code of Conduct and the principle of confidentiality.
  • Ensure transparency and DRC’s positive regard and reputation within communities.
  • This position requires travel between base/sub-offices/community centers/mobile centers. 
 
 
About you 
Essential Qualifications and Experience: 
  • University degree in social sciences, psychology or other relevant fields, or undergraduate degree with demonstrated strong experience;
  • Relevant professional experience of not less than 2 (two) years;
  • Familiarity/prior experience with DRC and its persons of concern (including internally displaced persons and refugees-returnees) would be a distinct advantage;
  • Familiarity with digital data collection
  • Familiarity/prior experience with NGO sector would be an advantage.
  • Good spoken and written English/Kurdish/Arabic and relevant computer skills.
  • Full respect for client/organization confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and respect for people with special needs and other vulnerability.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural context as a flexible and respectful team player. 
 
 
Preferred Qualifications and Experience: 
  • University degree in social sciences, psychology or other relevant field, or undergraduate degree with demonstrated strong experience;
  • Report writing skills.
  • Experience of work in the UN or NGO or voluntary sector is preferred but not essential.

Languages:  
  • Spoken and written Kurdish and/or Arabic is essential and/or English is appreciated.

We offer 
DRC will offer the successful applicant a contract until 31-May-2018, renewable dependent on both funding and performance. You must be available to start work from 10-December-2017.
