Introduction

Control Systems Engineer in the Engineering Department (EN), Cooling & Ventilation Group (CV), Controls Section (CL).

You will join:

  • The Engineering Department (EN), that provides engineering competences, infrastructure systems and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
  • the Cooling & Ventilation Group (CV), responsible for designing, constructing, maintaining and operating cooling, ventilation and air conditioning systems and large scale fluid distribution systems for the whole Laboratory, in particular in accelerator and Experiments underground areas; the size of these plants can range from small systems up to large scale of several MW.
  • The Controls Section (CL) within the CV Group in charge of the design, development, commissioning and support of control systems for cooling & ventilation installations.

Functions

As a Control System Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, implementation and support of industrial control systems for cooling and ventilation plants. You will be expected to be able to communicate with other professionals at all levels and with internal services and external contractors.

As an autonomous, proactive team player, you will:

  • Collect from projects leaders and operators the requirements for C&V process and define the functional analysis.
  • Design and develop (partially or totally) the PLC and SCADA codes for these industrial control systems.
  • Liaise with other CERN developers and oversee external contractors' activities in the implementation of control systems.
  • Manage, plan and participate in the commissioning (virtual and on site), defining the appropriate tests cases and supervising the tests with simulators or in situ.
  • Support the users of the control systems by training, troubleshooting or improving existing plants controls.
  • Write technical documents, reports and notes.
  • Take part in the stand by service for troubleshooting interventions on CV plants.

Qualification required

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of software computing, automation engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience in design and implementation of software systems.
  • Experience in requirements definition.
  • Experience in definition of tests catalogues and executions of tests.
  • Experience in PLC programming.
  • Experience in contract management for industrial installations

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Configuration, programming and use of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Configuration and programming of PLC and fieldbus system / Programming of PLCs.
  • Control Standards and regulation.
  • Installation, maintenance & operation in process control.
  • Knowledge of Advanced control design (model based predictive control and modern software engineering tools.
  • Design of Process control functional analysis / Requirement analysis and capability to write technical documents, reports.

Demonstrating the following competencies would be an asset:

  • Design of LV networks & switchboards.
  • Knowledge of cooling and HVAC process.

The language competencies required are:

  • Fluent in English or French with willingness to acquire the other language rapidly. Ability to draw up technical specifications and to make oral presentations in English.

Note on Employment Conditions

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.

These functions require:

  • Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Work in radiation areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
