Introduction

Mechanical Engineer in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX), Engineering & Integration Section (EI).

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will join the Physics Department (EP), CMS Experiment System Group, Engineering & Integration Section which is responsible for ensuring coherent design and integration of detector components for the Compact Muon Solenoid and its associated systems. Whilst ensuring it is done in a safe and effective manner, you will coordinate, support and oversee the work of diverse collaborating teams from around the world which are involved in the upgrade, operation and maintenance of the experiment.

Functions

As a Mechanical Engineer in the Engineering & Integration section, you will:

  • Define functional requirements for complex mechanical components, systems and infrastructures and prepare specifications and manufacturing folders in compliance with relevant standards, on the basis of discussions with colleagues in the engineering and integration team and with collaborating teams.
  • Conduct structural analysis and testing to ensure compliance with specifications and codes in force.
  • Oversee commercial procurement or manufacture at CERN, or collaborating institute workshops, of standard and custom-built equipment, components, materials and tools, taking responsibility as necessary for the follow-up of production, acceptance, assembly and installation.
  • Act as an interface between CERN and CMS Collaboration technical groups responsible for the different parts of the detector and its supporting infrastructure (e.g. magnet and cryogenics, opening/closing system, power, cooling, gas, humidity control etc.).
  • Co-ordinate assembly and installation studies and take a leading part in the preparation and supervision of work in the field, developing associated tooling and procedures as needed. Ensure safety of personnel working on site by conceiving specific access facilities and radiation protection shields.
  • Acquire a direct knowledge of the CMS underground installation in order to contribute to the continuous improvement of the "as-built" detector and to the study of integration tasks for new detectors and their services.

Qualification required

Master's degree or PhD, or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies

The demonstrated experience required for this post is:

  • Design, integration, construction, assembly, operation and trouble-shooting of complex systems, including supervising the execution of on-site work.
  • Effective teamwork in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Responsibility for components from conception through to operation.
  • Draft technical specifications, reports and documentation either in English or French language.

Demonstrating the following experience would be an advantage:

  • Safety analysis and technical follow-up of procurement contracts.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Organisation, planning and control: familiarity with precision manufacturing, assembly and construction methods; including preparation, planning, drawing and quality control.
  • Safety risk management: knowledge of principal safety regulations in the field of mechanical engineering (eurocodes en-1990/9).
  • Mechanical systems integration: working with 3D parametric computer-aided design tools, preferably with CATIA V5 and SmarTeam software; Advanced knowledge of FEA mechanical codes (preferably ANSYS).

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously; adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
