Title: Protection mainstreaming officer

Location: Aden with several field visits in southern governorates (40 Aden & 60 field)

Reporting line: Direct Protection Manager and working with FSL Manager, WASH coordinator, Multi sector project Coordinator

                             

Start Date & Duration: Starting date: 20th  January duration: 1 year 

 

Background

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries throughout the world. DRC provides direct assistance to conflict-affected populations- refugees, internally displaced people and host communities in the conflict areas of the world and advocates on their behalf internationally and in Denmark.   

In 2008, DRC started working in Yemen in order to respond to the mixed migration flows from the Horn of Africa.  DRC’s operations have since expanded to include food security, livelihoods, water and sanitation hygiene, and protection assistance to children, vulnerable households, internally displaced persons, and host communities.

 

PROJECT OVERVIEW

DRC wants to strengthen the protection response in the south of Yemen, the protection meanstriming officer will ensure the applucation of protection standard in the all DRC programs in south of Yemen such as WASH program, FSL program, NFI/Shelter ensuring that rights of beneficiaries are met and that no harm principle is respected.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of the Protection Manager, work with all the Program Managers/coordinators to ensure that protection mainstreaming principles are applied during all the phase of the project.
  • Identification, referral and follow up (light case management), for individuals and/or families and affected communities with protection concerns and needs
  • Provide technical support and supervise the application of protection mainstreaming in the field across different sectors and interventions
  • Undertake regular field visits to all program sites to support and assess program implementation, identify any concerns and obtain beneficiary feedback.
  • Developing and conducting trainings packages for staff and affected communities on protection related topics
  • Work with the M&E team to monitor and evaluate the program.
  • Implement youth trainings component under FSL program and ensure that vulnerability criteria are taken into consideration for the selection of beneficiaries
  • Work with DRC colleagues in other sectors, offices or programs to identify and capitalize on opportunities to integrate or improve integration of activities or response.
  • Work with the AM and M&E team to ensure guidance and application of Core humanitarian standard for quality and accountability in all our programs.
  • Ensure with the M&E team that proper and accessible complain systems are in place and functioning
  • Produce monthly report on the application of protection mainstreaming IN DRC programs in his/her area of responsibility and way forward for the protection manager and AM.
  • Comply with DRC’s Code of Conduct, program requirements and operational policies at all times and report any concerns through the appropriate mechanism.
  • Ability to travel within short notice
  • Any other duties as required by the supervisor.

     

    Additional Tasks:

  • Develop monthly work plan in agreement with program managers including field visits and trainings
  • Attend to field activities and food/NFIs distributions
  • Train DRC partners in protection mainstreaming
  • Train operation staff in humanitarian principle.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLs:

  • Bachelor degree in social work, social sciences, development studies, or related field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience working with a INGOs or UN agency in a similar sector.
  • At least 3 years of experience in protection programs with National or International NGOs
  • Ability to work in a structured manner and independently with limited oversight.
  • Able to work in team
  • Able to influence and provide advices
  • Experience providing training and support to project staff and partners.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, including a supportive working style.
  • Hard worker and goal oriented
  • Fluent (native) Arabic with Advance English, both written and spoken, additional language are an add value.
  • Ability to travel and visit activity implementation sites.
  • Solid understanding of and commitment to humanitarian principles
